I haven't had any luck finding the following family after the 1861 census except for Alfred and Charles. Perhaps they moved to London as Father - Edmund Rogers died in London and buried at Mentmore in 1867. Hoping someone may be able to help to find - Henry Rogers BP 1843 Mentmore Edmund Rogers BP 1847 Mentmore John Rogers BP 1849 Mentmore and Mother - Sarah BP 1807 Mentmore. regards, Margaret.

Thanks. though I still cant see them on 1861 - have you got the ref? Have seen them on 1851 now
Just been pottering on the 1871 census. Found Mentmore and neighbouring Hamlet Ledbourn so I went through the whole census for them - not a big task as only 17 sheets.
These are the only Rogers in Mentmore or Ledburn in 1871 -
1) Redborough Farm House William Varney 71 wid farmer bn mentmore David 47 son unm Sarah 43 dtr unm Jane 33 dau unm Ellen Rogers 13 grandtr bn Mentmore +servant
so it looks as if one of the Rogers boys married a Varney..
2) Hare and Hounds Inn Mary Anne Sayell wid 60 publican Frederick Dellhunt? son in law 23 butcher Emma " sister of wife 23 Minnie Jane " grandaughter 5 weeks Matilda Rogers niece 13 visitor bn Ringmore so I wonder who MAtilda's parents are
3) Cottage, Ledburn Phoebe Rogers wid 57 grocer bn Ledburn Sarah 30 dtr unm bn Ledburn
now this Sarah fits in with the one age 20 on 1861, know you say dies in 1873. I cant find another one on 1871. But here Phoebe is her mum, and yours has a mum called Sarah...
will keep looking around

Just done the same for Mentmore in 1871 - dont know if it helps or confuses the matter!
here are Rogers in that village in 1871
1) Redborough Farm House Varney family as in 1871 including Alfred Rogers Mar son in law 26 bn Ledburn Ellen 3 grandughter
no sign on a married daughter there. But there is your Alfred
2) George 42 Butcher Phoebe 47 Sarah 20 Frederick 16 Butcher all bn Ledburn
so that is the ones I found with Phoebe widowed in 1871, with the dtr Sarah same age as "your" one
3) Elizabeth 55 Mar farmers wife Bridget 14 Joseph 11 John 8 Matilda 5 Christopher 4 Charles 1 who's wife is Elizabeth I wonder?
4) John 55 Louisa 34 Ann 9 Frederick 8 John 6 Luke 4 Martha 2 Mary 1
5) Freeman household as you have mentioned Sarah 55 sister farmers wife John 12 nephew

Thanks Lizdb for taking the time to look into this for me. An explanation on the 1871 census at Ledburn you have found. Ellen Rogers, G.Dau at Redborough Farm House is Alfred Rogers and Selina (nee Varney)'s dau. Alfred is Edmund's son. Hare and Hounds Inn - Mary Ann Sayell is dau of Charles Beale Rogers - brother of Edmund. she is niece of Edmund's. Also there is Matilda- she is dau of John Hedges Rogers - who is son of Charles Beal Rogers. Phoebe Rogers is also a dau of Charles Beal Rogers. (3) who's wife is Elizabeth - This is Charles Rogers's wife - another of our Rogers Family (4) John ( which should be Jehu) and Louisa and family . Jehu is another brother of Edmund. It is a big family- It looks like Edmund and his family have moved away. I have Edmund's death - 10.12.1867 aged 60 yrs of London buried in Mentmore Church yard. regards, Margaret.

Hi Margaret, Found Edmund and his mother, Sarah ! Not in London, but in Nebraska! I could not believe it at first, but further investigation has me convinced. I think a daughter named Edith Ashby Rogers clinches it. Birth dates fit for both Edmund and Sarah (71 in 1880 Census) and a descendant somehow has an idea that Edmund was born in Buckinghamshire. Edmund's wife, Ann Mills was also born in England, but apparently emigrated with her parents and married Edmund in Otoe Co., Nebraska, 2 Aug. 1871. You can find the family in the 1880 US Census, free on the familysearch website. Edmund has been transcribed as Edmond and just put England for birth country, no county.
Still wondering why Edmund took his mother with him when he went off to homestead in Nebraska. Seems a bit odd as she would have been about 60.
You have at least two American cousins looking for information on various message boards and mailing lists. I'll give you directions to those in a PM.
Birth and death dates given by one of the descendants: Edmund Rogers 11 July 1846 - 20 Nov. 1916 Ann Rogers (Mills) 27 Aug. 1844 - 13 Aug 1902 both died and are buried in Palmyra, Otoe Co., Nebraska Apparently there is a tombstone with dates, no exact place of birth, just England.
Children of Edmund Rogers and Ann Mills :
Nellie Rogers no details Albert James Rogers b. abt 1872 Ne. Sarah Rogers b. 27 Mar. 1873, Ne. Arthur Edmund Rogers b. abt. 1876, Ne. Alice Louise Rogers b. abt. 1878, Ne. Edith Ashby Rogers b. abt. 1880, Ne.
Have not tried to find the other two brothers, yet. I think this is enough excitement for one day.
Cheers, Carmela

Hi Carmela, That is just amazing what you have found. Thank you so much for taking the trouble to find this info. It is 11 pm here in NZ so will digest this over night and will pm you tomorrow. My GG Grandfather was Joseph - Edmund's brother. Until then, regards, Margaret.
