Hi,
Does anyone have any idea what the initials M.N. might mean if placed at the end of someone's name on a Headstone? His name reads as: "JOHN POOK M.N." on the headstone. I believe he died by drowning, possibly a seaman? if that helps?
It even shows up on the Burial Locator CD in brackets: Source NZSG Cemetery Fiche Surname POOK Given Names John (Mn) Year of Death 1944 Record Number 23 Record Type M/I Age 28 Location Whakapirau St Albans Anglican Cemetery A08.12 Cheers, Jazz

In 1944 when he died the Merchant Navy was big stuff... carting supplies around the world and always being torpedoed. I know a man whose eyesight made him unable to enlist in the armed services so he mugged up on radio transmissions and joind the Merchant Navy. he was in the Malta convey and tthe ship he was on was sunk, another ship rescued hima dn others, then that sma enight it was sunk by the enemy... they were brave men doing an important job.
