Define First Generation - Completed thanks
« on: Tuesday 23 June 09 09:01 UTC (UK) »

Can anybody out there confirm a correct definition of a "First Generation" New Zealander.  e.g.
A parent of a child born here
A child of a parent who immigrated here
A child of a parent who was born here.

This question has been posed to me and I have no idea if there is a definitive answer - but perhaps there is a convention amongst genealogists that has been well established and/or documented  Huh

I do not have an answer JohnBarr  but it is a very interesting question  you have raised.

My thinking would be a child of a parent who immigrated here Roll Eyes
But I could be wrong Huh

Would be very interesting to know the answer

Hi John,

I would have to go with a child of a parent who immigrated here.

Cheers

Thanks for the replies and interest.

My thoughts exactly - same as Newbe, KHP and PastMaster.
The first generation actually born here - or maybe it could include those born on the voyage  Huh

But is there an authority that could confirm our thoughts and opinions.?

If you went by nationality, then you could I suppose count the person that first settled here, becuase it wasn't till 1900's was it that their was separate citizenship.
so these days we would go on nationality birth but then you were a british citizen anyway...weren't you???
Bye
