hi i dont think i have much chance with this request but thought i would give it a try, i have a elizabeth mcnamara born 1855 ireland she came to live in lancashire with her parents, there names at this point i dont know elizabeth married anthony nixon in 1873 haslingden the thing i am trying to find out about is elizabeths father ,was murded between rochdale and bacup. he was a dance school teacher, i have worked it out he must have died between 1858 and 1860, i have been told that the bacup archives have information on the murder, but i dont live anywhere near so cant get there. so i was hoping someone might have heard of the story, just thought it worth asking even though i have so little information any help would be appreciated thank you patricia,

If you get Elizabeths marriage cert if will give you thename of her father.
Jan/FEb/Mar 1873 Haslingden ref 8e 209 Anthony Malley Nixon one of brides Elizabeth McNamara
I'm slightly bemused that you know all about his occupation and his untimely demise, but not know his name!

I found Elizabeth, mother Julia and siblings (minus father) in the 1871. Patricia do you have the family in the censuses? I imagine you must as you have worked out the timespan that the father died. Elizabeth's youngest brother appears to be James aged 13 in 1871 and born Ireland, as is the rest of the family. I think lizdb's suggestion of buying the marriage cert of Elizabeth is your best bet.

I'm having problems locating the same family in 1861 ... perhaps they were still in Ireland?

Would it be likely that the murder was reported in the newspapers? Some people have access to newspapers - I used to but am unsure if I still do.
I'll have a dig around ...

I'm sorry Patricia - I managed to find the Times Digital Archive but couldn't find any mention of the case. You probably need to find a more local newspaper that is bound to have covered the story.
Someone with local knowledge might be able to help you.

If they need his name to look this up for you (as I expect they will, or at least it might make it easier) then remember reply 1 - it should be on the marriage cert!
