Tropical's Scavenger Hunt, Everyone Welcome To Join In
« on: Tuesday 23 June 09 10:00 UTC (UK) »

Welcome to this weeks Scavenger hunt and after the last couple of weeks hard ones I think this one will turn out to be a doddle.

Good Luck and Good Hunting.

Barbara

                                       *****************************

My maternal 3x great grandfather is George Hopcroft born possibly 1815 – 1820 probably Kensington or Westminster, Middlesex. Died ?

George married Caroline Aldridge
20 April 1841 St Marylebone, Middlesex
Both George & Caroline’s age was of full age and the address is given as St Marylebone

George’s occupation was given as a Smith
George’s father is George Hopcroft occupation Cordwainer
Caroline’s father is Thomas Aldridge occupation Wheelwright
Witnesses
Mary Ann Aldridge, Caroline’s sister
William Hopcroft, maybe George’s brother

Caroline Aldridge born 15 May 1822, Reading Berkshire, died 31 March 1880, Kensington

Children I have born to George & Caroline so far

George Hopcroft , born 27 Jan 1842, Westminster
Caroline Hopcroft , born 18 Nov 1844, St Marylebone
Mary Ann Hopcroft , born 17 Nov 1846, St Marylebone

I cannot find the family in the 1851 and 1861 census but have found Caroline and son George in 1871 census.
Source Citation: Class: RG10; Piece: 41; Folio: 67; Page: 21

I would love to find George bc 1815 on the census to try and get his true age and where born, and a bonus would be to find George’s father and mother and siblings

He was a locksmith born Reading circa 1812. They are in the 1851 census at 5 Brewer St Place, St Geo Hanover Square. There is an Aldridge relative with them - a widow Sarah 33  from Reading & her son Thomas b. Westminster

I know this is the wrong side of the river, but Hopcroft isn't particularly common in London and the father's name is correct.

GEORGE WILLIAM HOPCROFT

Birth:  01 AUG 1815

Christening:  25 AUG 1815   Saint Saviour, Southwark, Surrey, England

Thank you Janan & ShaunJ

I have been searching for George & Caroline in 51 & 61 census for over a year and half. I always dismissed George being born in Reading Berkshire, how wrong was I.

Jaywit... I did find the George you found and his siblings and parents,

George Hopcroft
Ann Gray
Marriage - 6th June 1797, St Olave, London

Children
Starting with the eldest first

Mary Ann Plaskett Hopcroft
Christened - 7th Jan 1798, St Saviour, London

Margaret Hopcroft
born - 15 Aug 1799, St Olave, London

John Gray Hopcroft
born -  15th June 1801, St Olave, London
Christened - 19 July 1801, St Olave, London

Eliza Hopcroft
born - 20th Oct 1804, St Olave, London
christened - 28th Nov 1804, St Olave, London

Benjamin Hopcroft
born - 8th June 1811, St Olave, London
Christened - 29th Sept 1811, St Olave, London

George William Hopcroft
born - 1st Aug 1815, St Saviour, London
christened - 25th Aug 1815, St Saviour, London

I just had a feeling he wasn't the right George but made a not of him, parents and siblings

I will post on the Berkshire board and see if anyone can help with a look up

I wonder if this is brother William with wife and children

William Hopcroft bc 1814 St Lukes Shoe maker  Grin

Class: HO107; Piece: 1553; Folio: 334; Page: 16

Toni .. I have tried to follow George & Ann Gray's children in the census without much luck.

I have always said to my mother i would not be suprised if the Hopcrofts came from Bucks, which there are alot on the early census of 41 etc. I was going to do a Hopcroft surname baptism, marriage and buriel search from BFHS and see what comes up.

I have just checked the IGI and nothing has come up for George on the Reading parishes Cry

I am afraid i have got to go to work now, i should be back on later this evening.

Thank you all so much for your help so far, it is much appreciated

Pam

 Cheesy Hey Pam,

If nothing is found here, I go home every now and then with a long list of look-up's for peep's.
Berkshire and Oxfordshire are really useless for stuff on the internet.

A Long thread of in's and out's of online records.........  Undecided
