Hi All,
I have the following marriage in my tree:
23/01/1905 St. Aloysuis R.C., Ardwick, Manchester Groom: Valentine Moore - 42 - Widower Bride: Mary Elizabeth Whitehead - 47 - Widow - No Profession - 38 Gibson Street, Ardwick - Father: James Boulton (deceased), Hardware Dealer
I'm trying to find Mary Elizabeth on any census and I'd also like to track down her first marriage but I'm getting no-where. Mary Elizabeth Boulton/Whitehead/Moore is turning into my brickwall.
Does anyone think they could turn Mary Elizabeth up on any census or have any suggestions for her marriage before Valentine Moore?
I have Valentine and Mary Elizabeth on the 1911 census as follows: 14 Cherryton Street, Chorlton-upon-Medlock, Manchester Mary E. Moore - age 56 - born Manchester.
Many thanks for reading. Best Wishes, Rowan Tree

The first problem is her birthyear
Aged 47 in 1905 gives a birthyear 1857/58
Aged 56 in 1911 gives a birthyear 1854/55
There are 2 other problems I can see:
Was she being truthful in 1911 and was she really 56 or possibly older (Valentime was a lot younger)
Had she been married more than once before? If so - you are not looking for a Boulton/Whitehead marriage. You would be looking for a Boulton to A N Other marriage and then A N other to Whitehead

Hi Carole - Thanks for your post
You're right about Mary Elizabeth's birth year being a problem. Going off her marriage cert. we've got a birth year of 1854/55 and going off the 1911 census we've got a birth year of 1857/58 but I'm not sure either of these are right.
I've checked FreeBMD and I can't find any Mary Elizabeth Boulton birth's registered in the Manchester area between 1850 and 1860. The closest I could find are a Burnley reg. in 1851 and a West Derby reg. in 1854. And when I search for the spelling Bolton instead of Boulton I don't get any more joy there either.
As I've not been able to find a Boulton/Whitehead marriage I thought it was possible Mary Elizabeth had been widowed not once but twice before she married Valentine Moore. However, I'd still hoped to find Mary Elizabeth on the census as a child before she married any of her husbands.
I'm still hoping someone reading will be able to find Mary Elizabeth Boulton (b. between 1854 & 1858 in Manchester) on the 1861 census living with her father, James Boulton a hardware dealer.
Thanks for reading, Best Wishes, Rowan Tree

This is an interesting lead and could be the Mary Elizabeth I've been hunting for.
Thanks for help, you've given me food for thought.

Hi bikermickau,
I've just had a break-through... Check out the following census:
Source Citation: Class RG13; Piece 3697; Folio 167; Page 7. Head - Julius Whitehead - 48 (c. 1853) - Little Sodbury, Yorkshire - Licensed Victualler Wife - Mary E Whitehead - 50 (c. 1851) - Manchester
Valentine Moore was also a Licensed Victualler. Coincidence? Maybe not!
I could do with turning up a marriage for Julius and Mary E now...
TTFN, Rowan Tree

Just found the following on LancsBMD:
1874 WHITEHEAD Julius WALTON Mary E Manchester Cathedral (formerly Manchester Collegiate Church), Manchester
Do you think the above could be my Mary Elizabeth Boulton after her first husband, named ? Walton died?
Regards, Rowan Tree
P.S. Sorry Laurina - we were typing at the same time

She is listed in the 1903 directory as:
Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Whitehead, Beer Retailer, 40 Gibson Street, Hyde Road, Ardwick.
Unfortunately she is not there in 1901.
38 and 40 Gibson Street, Ardwick was the Mechanics Arms in 1891.
Not any real help but I thought I would mention her occupation.
Regards, Mo

Hi Everyone and thanks for all your posts
This is turning into a really puzzler .
On the one hand the Mary Elizabeth Whitehead who was married to Julius Whitehead looks like a possibility. **Name & place of birth a match. **Year of birth doesn't rule her out. **Julius Whitehead and Valentine Moore were both licensed victualler's.
But on the other hand it looks like it can't be her. **The Mary Elizabeth who married Julius Whitehead had the maiden name of Walton and not Boulton (by the looks of things anyway). **Julius Whitehead doesn't appear to have died until 1909 (and divorce seems extremely unlikely as my Mary Elizabeth was R.C. or at least Valentine Moore was and they married in a R.C. church).
Now... The Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Whitehead, Beer Retailer, 40 Gibson Street - do we think she is the same Mary Elizabeth who married my Valentine?
Any thoughts, opinions, suggestions greatly appreciated.
Cheers Everyone, Rowan Tree
