Thanks for the complement but there are many people on here (actually most) who are much more able than me.  The only way I can think of, by which you might be able to find out what happened to them in between census', is by obtaining records from the Workhouse - these might tell you to whom or where they were discharged.  Other than that you will probably have to be content with what you have.

The only way that peple leave a mark for us to follow are through formal records (school, workhouse, census and BMDs etc) or by doing something to get themselves in the papers.  Now that I mention schools, you might be able to track their school records - but that will be a hunt (I did it for some of mine in Lambeth)!  I expect that until discharge from the Workhouse that their education would have be provided for in the Workhouse (could be wrong here).  But on leaving they would have been moved to another school until they were above school leaving age (12 years old I think).  In the Workhouse School attendence register there should be a column saying to which school they were transfered (or there was in my family's case) and a column indicating address / guardian.

So I would focus on workhouse records.

See, I would never  thought of school records, but I'll certainly start with the workhouse records, I have their mothers death cert so that's a start. Will I be able to view workhouse records online or will I have to go to Manchester Library ?

As this is likely to be an involved search of these Records:

........  Manchester Library are unlikely to do it as they have limited Staff.  You have 3 options:

1) Go to Manchester yourself.
2) Start a new thread and ask whether a local Roots Chatter might be able to help you.
3) Pay for a service from one of the researchers from here:

Hi,

Can't help with your specific query but I wanted to let you know I have a thread going on the Lancashire board about the cemetery at Withington Workhouse.  Apparently all the remains were removed and reburied at Southern Cemetery when the cemetery are the workhouse officially closed.  Unfortunately, from the replies I have received I don't think anyone knows whether the records are at Central Library, Manchester or at Southern Cemetery and although a fellow Rootschatter has found grave numbers there are no records of names.

There is a website called www.workhouses.org.uk which gives loads of information on workhouses and then if you type Withington in the search box you can find information specific to the Withington Workhouse.

Hope it helps.  Come and have a look around the Lancashire board - everyone is really friendly and they've given me lots of help with my research questions.

Hi Luzzu,
Thanks for your interest, I have however found my Ggmas place of burial although as yet haven't got around to visiting it.
From her death cert, I found the workhouse records at Central Library which gave me her place of burial.
Although she died in Withington Workhouse, her address was Gorton Manchester yet, she was buried at St Josephs RC, Moston Lane Manchester.  As it isn't a family grave, this might explain the distance between her home address and St. Josephs ?

I will certainly take a look at the Lancashire message boards

Hi,

Really pleased you found the information you were looking for.

I also had a relative who was buried at St Joseph's RC Cemetery at Moston and as I live a long way from Manchester a very kind Rootschatter on the Lancashire board went to cemetery and took a photograph for me.  All I had to do was provide him with the grave number and section which I got from Salford Diocese (all they need is the exact date of death).
