drag, cut and paste or copy and paste
« on: Wednesday 08 July 09 06:37 UTC (UK) »

I'm gradually moving files from my laptop to PC by transferring to usb memory stick to PC.

I've noticed that, depending on whether I drag, copy or cut, the time it takes to transfer to the usb stick can be considerably different.

Any idea why that would be?

Do I lose info if I use a particular method?  Folders seem the same size regardless.

Mostly jpg /jpeg and tiff files at the moment.

Well, cut and paste deletes the original file, so should be used with caution.  Dragging a file can either copy or move a file (or prompt), depending on how the user of the PC has set it up.

I would recommend the use of copy & paste - this will leave the original files intact, until you delete them manually.  I once used cut & paste (move) to transfer files across a network - the network connection failed, the files got corrupted in the move, and the originals were deleted.  Files deleted in cut & paste and move operations are not retrievable from the waste basket.

The quickest way is: Edit, select all - or all you wish to copy by holding down control and using mouse to select individual files - copy/move to folder, select USB and away you go.

The speed of transfer also depends on the quality of your USB and the port it is connected to.

Never move a file via a USB port !  You really do risk losing it.

Always use copy.  Move deletes the original, and it won't be in the waste bin - you won't be able to recover it if the transfer goes wrong.

Yes, I agree with you there.

The reason I added move was simply because Dave had said he was moving the files to his PC.

I myself always use "copy to folder'.
