Pleased that you are sorted out then Gatacre  Smiley

Not that it matters now, but using WU to bring down IE7 was quick and painless ....

would say that you have not installed IE7 as it takes a long time to download and install.  Click on Help >> About Internet Explorer and it will tell you which version you currently have installed.

so I dont know why 15 plus Mb and multiple iterations of download/update/restore points et al were involved - maybe a complete virgin install of IE7, (not as an effective upgrade to IE6) is bigger and longer ?- and by then of course we had established you were still on IE6 and obviously needed to obtain IE7 .....

IE6 doesnt show in 'Add / Remove Progs' (Control Panel) but IE7 onward does  Smiley

Watch for the Security Updates now for IE7

I checked my Windows Updates and found what I had done earlier and that was not to download IE 7.  All the updates are now in place except that I have rejected IE8.
It is probably easier to download when asked and not wait as I had done.

Thank you once again for your kind comments Smiley

Do you think i should stay with 6 then I am a bit of a scary baby when it comes to downloading things like that.Due to the fact i did it once and my Pewter went mad Grin

The reason i thought to try and update is. Every now and then i get the page with the torch searching,it just flicks on and off, like the other page that pops up now and then. With what i can only describe as a long line of naughts and crosses.I did catch the word ext at one time. I wondered if thats what the torch is looking for. Also if it's  anything to do with I.E Undecided

Celia

I do wish I could help but I am no expert.  I had to download IE7 because Ancestry told me to do so as I would not be able to access any of their info if I stayed on IE6.
I scanned the computer and the fault seems to have resolved itself.
I do hope some of the clever Roots Chatters will see your query and give their great help.  Where would we be without them?

Are you using IE7 in tabbed or paged mode ?

I haven't downloaded it yet Nick, because Gatacre mentioned it slowed the computer down, now fixed i see Grin The little problem with the torch searching hasn't appeared in the last week.I put my A.V.G. on search whole computer last week, which i have never done.It took over an hour and a half it came all clear, but maybe fixes an error on the way round.I will just have to wait and see,the torch only comes up now and then,so not a problem

Nick

I am on what must be paged mode as I was going to attend to the tabs situation later but then they disappeared.  Sorry for late reply have been taking a rest from the print

Read in the computer mag. that IE is not going to be available in the European version of Windows 7 and it will be much dearer to download than in the States.
I have not dared to look at Windows 7 but read that it is to be what Vista should have been.  Makes one wonder if they will really have sorted them selves out this time as down loading will be expensive altho if one is lucky one can pay for download in July for a cheaper sum

You can download a copy of Windows 7 free now from Microsoft which will work until March 2010.   The download is 3GB, though, so only do it if you have broadband  Smiley

If Windows 7 is downloaded is it possible to return to XP3, Nick?
Have you downloaded and what  is your opinion of the 7 version.  Your experience is invaluable as you are so good on a computer.

Will be interested to hear if it would be a real technical jump.

It's not easy to return - the best way to try it is to set up a "dual boot" system, where you choose which version of Windows to boot at start up.   If you Google "dual boot XP Windows 7" there are various tutorials on how to do it.  I haven't played with Windows 7 much - I haven't had a lot of time - but those that have tried it have reported favourably.  It's quite like Vista.

Thank you, Nick.  Not being an expert in any way I will have to stay as I am, but I am pleased to have your information.

A point has been made about IE7 and Ancestry, Microsoft every day now tries to get me to download IE8 for XP. Am I safe in doing this, and what would be the effects if any on Ancestry?

1) Yes (it's always reversible)
2) None
