Downloading IE7
« on: Tuesday 23 June 09 16:16 UTC (UK) »

I was asked by Ancestry to download IE7 as my IE6 would be out of date to get info from them.  As I was downloading IE7 I was asked to disable any anti-virus and spyware programmes.  When trying to find out how to disable the McAfee  of the aforementioned I was suddenly given a page thanking me for downloading IE7

I had not disabled anything as I did not know how nor had I continued to install IE7.

I have been into the  Add and Remove control panel item but have not found anything about IE

Being at a lost to know exactly what has happened I would really appreciate any help with this matter

Thank you

It should show up in 'Add / Remove Progs' as WINDOWS INTERNET EXPLORER 7.0 - size 2.71 Mb

click help up in your Browser Menu and check 'About Internet Explorer' - if IE 7 has downloaded and installed, it will shows its Logo there !"

It replaces IE6 effectively ...

Thank you Past Master

Internet Explorer is not in either of your recommendations to search.
If it is not there I may have to start the process again but will have to find how to disable the necessary virus and spyware to be able to continue the installation.

Your help is truly appreciated

I wouldnt worry too much about disabling your AV.

Did you obtain the download via Windows Update site ?

When I click Start the IE Logo is still there and I can get into a home page which I rarely use.   I clicked on Help and Support if that is the help to which you are referring.

with this RC page showing, right at the top above the RC stuff you should have IE related Menus and Icons ... Like FILE EDIT VIEW FAVOURITES TOOLS and finally HELP - click that HELP and then 'ABOUT IE' to see the version of the Browser ...

I'd advise using Windows Update to install IE7

http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us

it will also check to see if co-requisite fixes etc are needed and bring you up to date security wise.

Not sure I like the way AOL 'takes over' - if you had to fiddle to get IE6 up seperatly Huh

I admit that AOL is different and annoying at times.  I am up to date with windows updates but did not download  IE7 ages ago.  I did not want to go on 8 as so many seemed to be having trouble and was about to instal 7 when Ancestry gave notice that IE6 would be out of date for accessing their info
I am most grateful for you help and interest as I am no expert and Roots Chat is the best thing ever with its more than helpful members.

Thank You. once again.

That file you downloaded is only the beginning of a long sequence of downloads, updates, removals, backups, restore points and installations.

The main IE7 download file is 15,091kb in size.

Because Internet Explorer is a Windows component it does not show up in Add/Remove Programs - or at least the original version of Internet Explorer doesn't.  Subsequent versions should be displayed.

I would say that you have not installed IE7 as it takes a long time to download and install.  Click on Help >> About Internet Explorer and it will tell you which version you currently have installed.

If you use Windows Update, you'll get IE8, which is now the latest official browser from Microsoft, and a few people have reported issues with it.

You should always switch off your anti-virus program when loading any software, especially something like an internet browser, which may want to replace one or more Windows core components, and many AV programs will actively prevent this.

in early June, when rebuilding this PC, Windows Update offered IE7 first, and then IE8 later when IE7 had been installed (which I 'hid')

never had a problem with AV requirement - but then again its AVG   Tongue

Thank  you  for your messages.

I had another attempt at downlooading IE7 and have been successful.  It took ages to download and do all the necessary as Downside stated.

The tabs appeared and I was asked to arrange the pages? but decided to do that later as I am not very familiar with IE, that is the trouble with being on AOL.
I had read of the trouble with IE8.  Anything new is a mountain to climb without whatever it takes to get to the top.

Iam always grateful for Roots Chat and would never have  progressed without it and now once again you, all, have been so helpful.

Best Wishes
