Dewsbury Pictures
« on: Tuesday 23 June 09 16:24 UTC (UK) »

Hi all

I have recently come into possession of a CD containing 125 colour pictures of Dewsbury in the 60's and 70's showing the demolition and construction happening in the town.

I have no idea who took these pictures and if they are in copyright, however i have placed them on our Flikr site for anyone to look at.

If you go to http://www.flickr.com/search/people/?q=suentimb&m=names  You  then click on items and hey presto.... lots of lovely pictures.
Here are a couple of examples.

If you know any of the pictures please leave a comment or description to help others and myself identify the scene.

Cheers Tim B

HI Tim

What a wonderful find.  I wonder if the local history library at Dewsbury might be interested in a copy or loan of the pics.  I'm not old enough to remember the era but I can still still make out some of the places as per current roads and places within the area.  I only live half hour bus ride away and it was nice to see how it used to be esecially the bus station.

Tim,
great pictures and what Wendy says about the Library at Penistone being given  a copy if you felt so inclined, is a good idea- I think they'd be delighted.

Hi all..
I'd love to give copies of these pictures to anyone but I'm really unsure about the copyright issues at the moment. If and when I get to the bottom of it then who knows?

Tim, thanks so much for sharing these photos.  I moved to Dewsbury in the early '70's when I was 5 (now live in Ireland) and these bring back so many memories.  I remember the new bus station being built but looking at these pictures I have no idea how so much major work was afforded!  Dewsbury is a bit shabby in parts but there is still so much wonderful Victorian architecture.  One thing though - does anyone know what that old building is next to the Parish church?  It looks kind of like a typical haunted house.  I don't know if it is where the "new" swimming pool now is (i.e. the one they built about 35 years ago).

Hi Tink

I think the building you refer to was the Moot Hall, I don't know what it was used for but I'm sure someone will.

Tim B
Moot Hall was a court house to decide local issues.
