Probable brothers?

I may be clutching at straws here.

I've been researching my Bogle line for 4 years (ish) and have been stuck for about 3 of those on my 5 x gt grandfather William Bogle bn c1755 in Biggar.   

Yesterday I noticed a Bogle birth in Biggar that I had missed before a Jannet Bogle born 1785 to a James Bogle and Kathrine Bell...


Now bearing in mind that Biggar still is a fairly small town I KNOW they are related but do you think it is probable that James and William are brothers?  or would that be assuming too much?

I also found a birth of a James Bogle in Biggar in 1734 but am a bit hesitant about this being the same man as it would make him 51 y/o when his daughter was born ...... perhaps HIS father?

Also, to save anyone some leg work.... I already have the names of every single Bogle who lived in Biggar during the 1841 census and they are ALL children/grandchildren of my William so no insight there lol

Any second opinions? ideas?

Personally speaking, as tempting as it is to accept this  it would have to remain on the "maybe pile" until I could prove it to my complete satisfaction. (once bitten etc. )

there are also quite a few Bogle births listed in Wiston & Roberton Parish which is not that far away.

I've added him to the tree with a several "Huh" after his name and a note that it is only a possible relationship.  Either way, I'm sure I'll find out who he is at some point Smiley

Just joined!! noticed you have the William link.  I think I am related to that line too.  My grandfather was Andrew Craig Bogle.  Have some info too somewhere.  James rings a bell..butcher?  Have you found any links to the Bogle's of Glasgow, those Merchant people, with reference to the slave trade..George Bogle, Robert Bogle and so on.  I will try and hunt out what I have got, but I think it might be the same as yours.  Biggar, Broughton, Peebles, west linton or was it East??

William Bogle
born 1755 Biggar

James Bogle (married Margaret Dickson..Wintson/Roberton
born 1782 Biggar
death 1764 Roberton

John Bogle
born 1 july 1812
death 28 August 1838

James Bogle
born 1837 Biggar (thou his father John died 1838??)

James Bogle
born 18 August 1858
Butcher ( I think he was a master butcher married Elizabeth)

James Bogle Peebles
24 sept 1883
married Helen Scott Erskine Forrest

James Bogle butcher
married Mary Craig 24th May 1908 in Edinburgh

Andrew Craig Bogle
born 8th April 1912 Peebles


I can't remember why I wrote this done:

William Bogle married Janet Veitch (26th May 1753)

James Bogle born 31 Aug 1794
His parents William Bogle and Katherine Spence

also I am confused with this too:

John Bogle born 1 July 1812.  His parents James Bogle and Maragaret Dickson.  They married 8th June 1810.  James died 1864 aged 81, wintson/robertson.  His parents were James Bogle and Catherine (Bell) Bogle.

I think I have jumped somewhere.

I haven't been able to tie in with the Glasgow Bogles at all I'm afraid, well and truly stuck in Biggar with William.

However, I DO have your Peebles branch on my tree so I can help you out with that one.  I'll give you your paternal line as I have it (slightly different to what you have)

William Bogle b1755 m Katherine Spence

son James Bogle b1794 m Margaret Scott

son James Bogle b 1838 m Margaret Nisbet

son James Bogle b 1859 m Helen Scott Erskine Forrest

son James Bogle b 1883


I don't seem to have a John Bogle born 1812 in my lot anywhere ...maybe it's me who has missed a step lol

Sorry James Bogle 1838 married Elizabeth Crombie Nisbet (far too many James' and Margarets in this tree I'm confusing myself lol)

Did you check the website link I posted.  I read some other posts of yours.  You weren't sure if William and James were related, but I think they were brothers, sons of William Bogle 1755.  Now if you keep clicking the highlighted blue links you will come across Thomas.  He went to America not Oz as far as I can tell.  And the John Bogle 1812 is on the links too. 

I seem to have come to dead end with what goes before William Bogle 1755.  I was wondering if the surname would have change due to the time, maybe bogill or whatever.  The bookbinder in Edinburgh seems interesting, though I cannot find much about him, was he married, children and all. 

The first names William, James and John seem to run down the tree.  Either one of them could be the father of William Bogle 1755.  Though I think maybe John maybe named after an uncle.  I will hedge my bet it is James.  Just guessing Huh

My dad's grandfather was a butcher in Peebles.  So, the Bogle's are meat eaters all over the place!!

I did look at the first link you posted, unfortunately I have seen it before and sent an email to whoever owns the site to point out some errors in the Bogle line but they haven't changed any of the info.

I'm sure William and James ARE brothers but they cannot possibly be the soms of William born 1755 as that IS my William lol.


William 1755 and Catherine Spence had the following children:

William 1778
Margaret 1780
Janet 1782
Marion 1784
Thomas 1787
Alison 1790
Katherine 1792
James 1794 (Your James who married Margaret Scott ..... I have his death certificate if you would like to pm me your email adress so I can send it onto you)
Anna 1796

I'm not sure where the James Bogle who married Margaret Dickson ties in  with the rest of them but I'm sure we'll find out soon enough.

The William Bogle who was the bookbinder never married and seems to have been living with his sister up til his death.

And the bogles defiantely seemed to have been a Butcher family lol , the branch of the family that moved to Hawick also had a Butcher shop !

I'm just going to have a look at the second link you posted, haven't seen that one before so shoudl be interesting to read.
