National Archives look up request please
« on: Thursday 16 July 09 08:07 UTC (UK) »

I recently obtained the marriage certificate for George Lawrence and Sarah Allison. When it arrived there was very little in the name and occupation of both fathers as the cert is quite messy in these boxes. It could mean that both bride and groom were illegitmate in which case end of story or somehow these boxes suffered some damage (though looking at the cert the info surrounding the boxes is almost readable.
I was wondering next time anyone was visiting the Archives could they check the original copy to see if both boxes are empty or just a poor copy.
The details are - George Lawrence m Sarah Allison - Year 1843,
                                                                                   Qtr Dec
                                                                                   District Westminster
                                                                                   Vol 1
                                                                                   Pge 340
I have entered a bridged copy of the cert on the deciphering board as I needed help with other apsects of the cert
Many thanks

Hi Lottee,

I don't think the National Archives have any marriage registers; you would need to check the parish register or register office where the marriage took place.

Perhaps the GRO can issue a clearer certificate if you explain the problem.  Undecided

Hi Lotee

As Nanny Jan says you would be best checking the original parish register entry. I've looked on your other thread

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,392591.msg2638591.html#msg2638591

And the father's boxes look blank to me. As you say the usual reason for this is one of the parties is illegitimate and doesn't know who there father is and the other party decides to leave a blank as well. That said I have a marriage with blanks like this, and the original entry is the same, but both parties were  born after parent's marriage - maybe one of them knew something I don't Cheesy

Would definitely check the original parish register to be sure
