From Prison To Priesthood - Father O'Brien
« on: Tuesday 23 June 09 18:55 UTC (UK) »

Hi all,

I am trying to find out more informtation about an interesting figure in my O'Brien family tree. I have recently discovered that my gt gt grannys brother, Francis O'Brien, was born in the County Prison in Linlithgowshire on July 12 1876 to James O'Brien and his wife Anne Doonan who were both born in Ireland.

I understand that Francis adpted a miDdle name of Peter but still used Francis in all instances. He trained at Valladolid in Spain before being officially ordained a priest on June 29 1902, aged 24. I am trying to find out what training exactly he would have had and what it entailed.
After he was ordained he went back to Scotland (July 2 1902) and I do not know anything about his career as a man of the cloth, up until his death on December 2 1947. At the time of his death he was the parish priest of Denny, Stirling, in the Archdiocese of St Andrews and Edinburgh. He died at St Alexander's Presbytery and from what I gather he was a Roman Catholic.

Any information on his priesthood will be brilliant and appreciated very much. I tried to contact the church today but no luck, will try again tomorow.

Regards and thanks for reading. I look very forward to hearing from anyone with some information regarding either the priesthood or the prison Smiley

Hi Reaybo,

Recovered from the weekend at York yet??  Grin

I can't help directly, but if you have a wee look here: http://warmemscot.s4.bizhat.com/viewtopic.php?t=1660&mforum=warmemscot

There's a picture of St. Alexanders and if you read through the thread, the name of the Parish Secretary is one the last message.

Address/contact Nos. for St. Alexanders:

Tel: 01324 823310
100 Stirling Street, , DENNY, FK6 6DL

He's buried in Denny Cemetery.

"Pray for the respose of the soul of Rev. FRANCIS P. O’BRIEN
Parish Priest of St. Alexander’s, Denny May 1928 – December 1947"

Anne,

You are an absolute star.

This is fantastic...I am not too used to seeing gravestone's on this side of the family. Thankyou very much for that photograph I never imagined I would see that!

That gives me the date he came to the parish, awesome!

I owe you for this big time! That picture is fantastic! Thankyou very much indeed!

Try contacting Andrew Nicoll at the Scottish Catholic Archives, he should have some record of your ancestor there.
