Johann van Koetsveld
« on: Tuesday 23 June 09 19:03 UTC (UK) »

Does anyone know where I might find information on the birth and parents of Johann van Koetsveld. From his gravestone in Victoria AUS, he was born about 1833 in Holland. All I know is that he was supposed to be a sailor who left his ship in Melbourne and eventually was a farmer in the Daylesford area of Victoria.

http://www.naa.gov.au/collection/recordsearch/index.aspx
 - has what I think is his naturalization records from 1899.

Say he was: John Koetsveld, aged 61, born Schiedam, Holland, arrived in June 1858 on the ship St. John, from the port of Schiedam, has resided in Victoria for 40 years, he was from "Mush Creek"

http://www.schiedam.nl/smartsite.shtml?id=19889&goto=19892
Here you can find a Jan van Koesveld, b. 18 August 1837, registered 21 August 1837, parents Jan and Neeltje (nee Stuivenberg).

Do his marriage and death certificates give any info about parents? This looks like it might fit, but it would be nice to have some more firm info (especially to clear up the slight age inconsistency).

That's fantastic, thank you so much.
The naturalisation details are certainly the right man. I have his place of abode as Musk Creek. I had typed his birth date wrongly , it should have been 1838. Died 1916 aged 78. Don't know whether my maths was wrong or my typing!!!!!

At present I do not have his marriage cert. Someone in Daylesford VIC is trying to see what they have in their local records. Will get my son in law to see if he can get it. The Koetsvelds are his mother's family. One bit of corrobative evidence is that he had a daughter Neeltje.
Thanks again. I'm so exited I am likely to miss my tea!!!!!!

Eric
I havent logged on enough to use the message service thingy so cant reply if you send (as you did) one of those -yet.

Jan / John Van Koetsveld did marry Elizabeth Mirriam Walker in Daylesford in 12 October 1863. They had 12 children (not 13 as I indicated last post)
His parents were Jan Van Koesveld and Neiltga Stuivenberg. He was born in Scheidam, Holland

Hi
Thanks for your message. I knew it was Daylesford but didn't have the date.
Have you found the Schiedam web site with births and marriages that takes the family back another couple of generations. Just needed confirmation of his parents' names.

Do you have anything on Elizabeth Mirriam Walker? I found a ref that said she was born in Worcestershire and also that her name was Elizabeth Mirriam Pitt Walker. So far haven't found her for sure in the English parish or census records.
I only have 11 children for the couple, enough for anyone I should think!!!!!!
I have some details coming in the post from a lady at Daylesford museum.

If you want to send a personal message, which is useful if you want to send something that you don't want everyone to see, such as an e-mail address or other "sensitive" information, click on the green scroll on the left hand side of the message that comes via  Roots chat.

Thanks again for the info.

regards
Eric
