Rolison/Rollison/Rolinson/Rowlinson/Rawlinson.
« on: Tuesday 23 June 09 19:54 UTC (UK) »

As you can see there is a problem with the amount of differing ways this surname has been spelt over the years. To date I have 12 different ways of spelling, what should actually be "Rolison" in my tree.
I live quite some way away from Cheltenham, and wonder if anyone is likely to be paying a visit to the records section and could perhaps do a look up for me.

I have Gr Gr Gr Granparents John Rolison and Rebecca ? who are the parents of John/Rebecca/Sophia and Joseph ( Joseph is my Gr Gr Grandfather) All these children were born in Ramsden Heath between 1813 and 1820.

I believe John was born about 1813 as he is shown as being 38 years old in the 1851 census, he married Rebecca Jennings on the 12/4/1834 in Westley Waterless, Cambs.

Rebecca was born in 1815?, and she is shown as a widow in the 1851 census aged 36 years-married name Curtis (m) 27/10/1832.

Sophia was born in 1818/9 according to the 1851 census, where she is shown as aged 32 years, however I have a copy of the original record from the fiche at Chelmesford that shows her as being baptised in 1813. Maybe there was two Sophia's born!! As this is the year her brother John was born perhaps she was a twin. Sophia was married to John Bridge in Westley Waterless, Cambs on the 19/9/1840. The name on the marriage cert was spelt Rowlinson-Father John Rowlinson.

Finally Joseph, my Gr Gr Grandfather, was born 1819 ish-baptised on the 14/2/1819 in Ramsden Heath-I have a copy of his record from the fiche also. He married Eliza Rivett on the 25/12/1843 at Carlton, Cambs-Father John Rolinson this time.

Any help/suggestions as to where I go from here are very welcome. Maybe the Parents John Rollison and Rebecca were married in Ramsden Heath!

HELP PLEASE!

Baptism dates often have no connection to the birth date, quite often birth and baptism were years apart although it would seem most had their children baptised within weeks of being born, If Sophia was a twin wouldn't twins normally be baptised together, unless one was very ill and baptised privately at home and then received into the church at a later date.
There may well be 2 Sophia's born if it was a common name to the villgage
Pity I hadn't spotted this earlier as I was at the local record office yesterday

Thanks for your reply. In this instance the year of birth for Sophia in the 1851 census is a few years after the baptism, so this is the oher way round. As I have been struggling with trying to sort out this part of my tree for about two years now-the next time you go to the record office perhaps you could have a look for me to see if you can come up with anything, but as I say, I have now got 12 variations on the spelling of Rolison!! So it is not looking hopeful Huh

Is there anyone likely to be going to the Records Office sometime in July, and would be kind enough to have a look for info for me on this one. It would be very much appreciated.  Smiley
