No.524 RAF Squadron
« on: Tuesday 23 June 09 23:36 UTC (UK) »

I have discovered a relative a Joseph A Robinson b.27 Jan 1925 in Failsworth, Lancashire, England was part of the No.524 Squadron was formed at Oban on 20 October 1943 for the purpose of obtaining operational experience with Martin Mariner flying boats. The type was not adopted for RAF service and the squadron disbanded on 7 December 1943.

On 7 April 1944, No.524 reformed at Davidstowe Moor with Wellingtons (Twin-engined medium bombers), for patrols against E-Boats off the French coast. Once located, these were the targets of strike squadrons which worked closely with the Wellingtons, though ocasionally No.524 took part in bombing attacks on enemy shipping.

In July 1944, it moved to East Anglia for similar operations off the Dutch coast and these continued until the end of the war. On 25 May 1945, the squadron disbanded.

The reason for my request is how can I find out more about the Squadron and Joe's death in 1945? I have been told that he was due to come home and opted to stay for a final mission with his bombers crew and was shot down that evening.

Can anyone help me locate his date of death other than a possible 1945?

Hi,

You may be better asking this question on the armed forces board.  They have a far greater knowledge.  I can`t quite pinpoint  him on the www.lostbombers.co.uk site which is usually very good.

Google  RAF WW2 "David Richard Lewis" - he was lost as well.  There is only one hit on another forum.  Click on "Cached" and Scroll down until you find number 3154.

Apparently they were in a Wellington that took off from Langham on a shipping patrol and were lost over the sea.

David,

Have you tried the RAF museum at Hendon?  They have a superb archive.

TNA will have the ORBs for the squadron.
