There are two born about the right time:
Baptisms Hawkhurst 1799 22nd Mar John son of Arthur & Margaret GRAY 1804 25th Nov John son of John & Susan GRAY Note: Age 7w
Have you any connection with Samuel RELF born c1796 in Hawkhurst, married to Elizabeth LAVENDER?

Hello bettyofkent thank you for the two John's baptism the second one- do you think the note 7 wks old mean't that the baby was 7 wks old or died 7 wks old. Both the John's could be the father of John, but I'm leaning towards Arthur by a nose going on the date of death of my John, anyway I believe that the Arthur & John are brothers. Re Samuel Relf my Sarah Relf was born Brightling and married in Hawkhurst 1827, her parents Thomas Relf of Brightling & also from Brightling Elizabeth Atkins. Hello Lizdb John Gray 1841 census Parish of Hawkhurst at Horns Pitt farm born in county, 1851 & 1861 census both state Kent Hawkhurst as where born. RabbitB Hope the explanation above re Relf connection answers your question.
Hope this is the correct way to answer all three Regards Ken

Hi Ken,
I also have not yet sorted out all the children for my lot, they had a habit of marrying within a couple of families all come from Brightling or Burwash. My g.gran for example, had sisters who married my g.gramps brothers, and the brothers on the other side seemed to marry sisters. Small villages you see!
I also have a couple of Thomases, one of whom had 7daughters and three sons, but pre census. But I admit that so far I haven't look for anything other than the direct line back yet.
