Leighton Buzzard address: 62 Regent St. what is/was there in 1950s?
« on: Wednesday 24 June 09 05:48 UTC (UK) »

The address 62 Regent St Leighton Buzzard has emerged as where the person [ J.A. BARRETT now dead] may have  lived in 1952.

Can someone who knows the town please tell me what is/was at this address?  Is it an office? a house? if a house, what sort of house and fitting what sort of socioeconomic group?

Any info/comments most gratefully received- and thanks,

charlotte

  Hi Charlotte.....

Yes Ricky is right. Regent Street is a residential road made up of a mix of terraced.... semi's and the odd detached house. Some new houses were added late 60's I believe but there is a good chance 62 remains the same as it did at the time . I used to have a friend who lived there when we were little and it has not changed in the last 40 years.
A 3 bed semi there cost around £225,000.

Just checked my map of LB and Regent street just falls off the edge of the map in 1900.
It looks like one side was developed and at least some of the other side had buildings on it, from memory I don't think there are any houses newer than 1950, it's a late Victorian early Edwardian area.

Hi Charlotte
I have never sent anyone a photo via roots but I have through email, so yes I think a pm would be best.
I will try and take the photo this weekend.
As to the other question, there is also an Operatic society, not sure how old it is or if I know anyone in it.
When I moved to LB in 1985 all three drama groups were in existence with the masqueraders being the newest group, so on reflection I don't think that will be the one.
I know the drama group have a sort of an archive but I don't know how far back it goes, I will find out.
It was 1990 when I left the group and very few still remain from then, I do know one lady who would be in her late 60's, she has moved out of town but I have her phone number.
I will try and do this over the next few days so don't hold your breath!!!!
bye for now, Borri.

Borri, Thanks... and will PM you with my email address.

Biddy Hastings was born 1918 and lived in LB from 1957 [maybe earlier] to c. mid 60s when Mr Barr*tt died. So the person you know would have been in her late teens early 20s..are my maths correct Huh

The lady may remember the name Barr*tt if he was a generpus supporter of the music and drama socs.

Thanks again,
charlotte
