How do I find BARR*TT/HASTINGS in Leighton Buzzard 1960s?- both now dead
« on: Sunday 21 June 09 05:03 UTC (UK) »

From c 1957 Margaret Diana [Biddy] HASTINGS [ b 1919] lived in Leighton Buzzard with a Mr BARR*TT who was probably some years her senior.  She wore his wedding ring and often passed herself off as Mrs B.

Mr BARR*TT  had extensive investments in holiday rental property around England.  He had died by late 1960s and left his estate to Margaret who sold the holdings. She died in 1988 in N Yks.

While living in Leighton B. she may have been involved in local musical & drama groups- she'd been at RADA.

How I can find out where they lived in L.B please? & his full name and death date?
Is there any local directory for say 1957-65 where Mr B. might be listed and would give an residential address enabling a search of Electoral Rolls?

Any advice/ info on this much appreciated... thanks,
charlotte

Have you got his will? If made while at LB it should give his address.
Likewise hers.

Or if he died at LB then death cert.

i believe there should be some directories around the time you are looking for they begun to die out (1966)

electoral rolls are a possibility but these are organised in address form so would need to know whre they were living to search them

and then there is the possibilty of phone books

lizb, No I don't have his will as I don't know his full name nor even the correct spelling of his surname.  I started to go thru probate lists and there were so many BARR*TTs in Beds it was impossible to get a line on him.
Can't get his death cert either as don't know what to ask for...

I have Margaret Hastings death cert[1988] and her will but after he died she went to Whitby to live and died in N Yks. Her will makes no mention of him.

Hi toni... are you talking about Trade Directories in which he might appear?
If there is one for say 1957 would it be for Beds. or for Leighton Buzzard or for where please?

Mr BARR*TT owned extensive real estate across England that was holiday rental stuff but I doubt that it would  have been handled by him personally...
Don't know what category he'd be under?

Phone books yes, but I'm in Aus. so getting at them is a bit hard Sad

Me again
If I get a chance I will pop into the Library and see if I can find anything, can't promise on this one.
I know what Barretts are like, thats my Grandmothers side, they keep changing the spelling.
My Barretts come from Milton Keynes (as it is now) so there is no connection with yours although I was best man when my friend married Therese Barrett, she was of an Irish family, very common name!!!!!
