Woolston - Essex
« on: Wednesday 16 September 09 11:18 UTC (UK) »

Hi,

Only just started looking into family history and have discovered that my great-grandmother appears in the 1911 census in a Child Receiving House in Stepney and then appears to be in the Romford Union Workhouse (Oldchurch Road) around 1918.

I have a document that shows she was also a domestic servant around this time, with the address as 3 Collier Row, but not really sure where to take it from here.

Any advice?

Hi and welcome to Rootschat

You have posted on the one name studies board - but there is no name in your post

Are you wanting to trace her ancestry - or are you looking for post 1918 info

If her ancestry - What birthplace and birthyear is shown for her on the 1911 census - and also her name

Do you have a copy of her birth cert showing either her parents or just mothers name if she was illegitimate

My apologies - in the excitment I forgot to post the names up!!

The person I have found is 'Mary Woolston' and I know that she gave birth to a William Douglas Woolston in 1918 - there is no father's name on the birth certificate and the address is given as '1 Oldchurch Road'.  I have subsequently discovered this was a workhouse in Romford.

Tracing back Mary it would appear she may well be the same person that appears in the 1911 census as a 10 year old living in the Ratcliff Receiving Home for Children, located at Salmon Street, Stepney and I have ordered her birth certificate to try and find out a little more.

What I am interested in, however, is post-1918 movements and not sure how to go about this.  There is another address on the 1918 birth certificate as '3 Collier Row, Barking' and occupation as domestic servant, and this is something I would like to try and find a little more about also.

Thank you,

Steve
