Which is my Mary Phythian?
« on: Wednesday 24 June 09 10:39 UTC (UK) »

Can anyone help me to find out where Mary Phythian was baptised?

Mary Phythian was my 3xgreat grandmother.  She married George Sephton on 14 September 1818 at Aughton, near Ormskirk and they had 10 children.  They lived in Rainford and then in Bickerstaffe. Mary died in Bickerstaffe in 1874 at the age of 75.

However, I cannot be sure of Mary's birth.  According to the censuses from 1841 to 1871 she was born in Knowsley between 1796 and 1801.  There are two possible entries for Mary's birth on the IGI.  Firstly, baptised 11 Feb 1798 (born 24 Jan 1798) at Huyton, daughter of Martha Phithian (Batch No C021860).  Secondly, an extracted record for baptism  21 Apr 1799 at Childwall, daughter of Margaret Phithian (Batch No P020811). How can I tell which is likely to be the right one?  As Mary named her first daughter Margaret (possibly after her mother), the baptism at Childwall seems likely but Knowsley was in the parish of Huyton at the time so it could be that one.  How can I tell which is which?  I'd be grateful for any ideas.  Thank you.

If you are able to get to the Liverpool Record Office, or if you are too far away to do so, then a FHS Centre (you can search for your nearest one on the familysearch site), and see the film of the baptisms for yourself, you MIGHT find that there is an entry in the baptism registers giving the birthplace - maybe not the full address but possibly mentioning "of this parish" or "Knowsley".

Mary, thanks for the tip about the Family History Centres.  I hadn't realised there may be extra information in the parish records so I'll request the appropriate films and check.

Michelle, I had noticed that record and sort of passed it by as it made Mary too young (she was very consistent with her age on the censuses) but in view of Mary's comment I shall look at it again.  Thanks for reminding me Smiley

Hi

I have the same name in my tree but from the Worsley/Little Hulton area. I have come across so many different spellings of the name that I eventually gave up looking. On the wonderful Lan-Opc site there are a few early entries in Ormskirk for FITHIANS. My families name is sometimes spelt PHI... sometimes FI... somestimes its ....IAN sometimes ...IAM, even ...IUM they are all the same family though.

Good luck
