Hi all
The National Roll of the Great War, was a private book you paid your money for a space in the book. it was not a official book, The War Office(MOD) have always called the medal"the British War Medal 1914-1919".

Except, OldBraggs, Private Hodge wasn't in India till 1917 apparently.

I'm itching to see the medal card now.
Were you planning to download it Jim, or do you mind if I do?

Hi Jim,

Here's the medal card bottom right.
This is the only Private H Hodge in the Essex Regiment as far as I can see. It's not the most informative medal card I've ever seen, but confirms war Medal but no Victory Medal.

I think the conclusion is don't trust the National Roll of the Great War at face value!

Thanks ever so much for that. Really appreciated.

At least we have his number now - i presume there would be an army record for him, just like other soldiers, presuming it survived?

Hi Guys,

Is the following correct?

"The 2nd Garrison Battalion was put together from a selection of lower category men from the Norfolks, Suffolks, Bedfords, Middlesex, Royal Fusiliers and Royal Sussex with a dash of East Surreys and a hint of West Kents."

Maybe Harry was part of the Bedford's prior to being with the Essex Regiment?

What do you think?
