OCCUPATIONS- Belfast & Co. ANTRIM
« on: Tuesday 15 November 05 06:43 UTC (UK) »

I noticed an enquiry regarding an ancestor who worked on the railways in Co. Antrim and hope to compile a short list of names from some railway books in my possession. Most of the information is about trains. I will do my best to find people.

Some people may have relations who are / were in the entertainment business or theatrical profession in the north of Ireland. Did any of your ancestors manage or own a concert hall, music hall or theatre in Ireland Huh

One or two members have ancestors who worked at either the docks or the shipyards in Belfast. I am sure many of you will be interested in the working conditions of a docker in the early days of the 20th Century.

Listen to several conversations about shipbuilding in Belfast which were recorded as a series of interviews conducted by Ruth Graham in early part of 2003 as part of the Topography of Titanic exhibition.

Harland and Wolff Islandmen Project
« Reply #3 on: Saturday 02 June 07 10:00 UTC (UK) »

John Baucher recently purchased over 1300 former Harland & Wolff shipyard workers ID cards in a job lot at an auction.

He has started the Harland & Wolff Islandmen Project and is interested in hearing from any of the people (or their relatives) listed on the database and interviewing them to record their memories of the shipyard.

Feel free to contact John to discuss your story and memories of the Yard.

ardee7 sent a query to the Project and was advised that the records cover the period from 1972 to 1989.

Accidents at work and Coroner's Reports
« Reply #5 on: Wednesday 21 May 08 21:37 UTC (UK) »

Anyone who has an ancestor who died as a result of an industrial injury should, in the first place, write to the Head of Access Section at PRONI who will forward your request to the Northern Ireland Court Service's Departmantal Record Officer. http://tinyurl.com/4fwr28 This applies to reports relating to fatal injuries on building sites, the linen mills, the shipyards and other instances involving a Coroner.

The records of the Inglis Bakery are deposited at PRONI. The Inglis Bakeries were one of the largest employers in the area and had a workforce which sometimes exceeded 1,000 people. www.rascal.ac.uk/collection/?ff=no&CollectionID=466&ff=no

Many Ulster people have seafaring connections. You may find your ancestors names mentioned in articles about seafarers. The site below is probably one of many on the subject. The names listed in this site include -
Boyd - Whitechurch; Cunningham - Ballyclare; Gilmor - Ballywalter; Glair - Ballylinney; Kerr - Ardglass; Kenn - Aberdeen (Buried at Bangor Abbey); Johnston - Larne; Manning - Greencastle; Picken - Ballykeel; Robinson - Antrim; Wilson - Islandmagee
