Is anyone interested in cricket?
« on: Saturday 08 August 09 20:39 UTC (UK) »

Does anyone know the identity of the players and any other information regarding the attached photograph?  The caption reads " Hambledon versus England played on Broadhalfpenny Down September 10th 11th and 12th 1908" Huh

Hi Bazzer

Welcome to Rootschat

Do you have access to "The Times" archive online via your local library ticket as there are a number of comprehensive reports of the match in "The Times" including names etc..?

The only face I can recognise for sure is C.B. Fry. He is the man with the straw boater.

The score card is here:

Not sure if this is any good. It lists the MCC team:

Hi Julian - long time no see. Do you mean the man standing directly behind Fry? I had though that might be C.P.Mead but could not find a good enough pic to compare.

Hi Hack - I've been keeping quiet recently   Grin

I can't prove it is Mead (I looked for photos on the net and couldn't find a good match), but I am sure I've seen an image before of him which looks similar (probably in one of the many cricket books I have read LOL).  The three guys at the back are probably all Hampshire players by the look of their cap/blazer badges.  Cricinfo does have a photo of Mead in South Africa which suggests he was slimmer when younger (weren't we all?) http://www.cricinfo.com/ci/content/image/175407.html

We could do with the Mead in the photo for the fifth test (but even better if we could get hold of Hobbs at his best).
