Hello,
Wonder if anyone can help.
I'm trying, in vain, to find out what happened to my gt grandfather's only full sister Jane Sophia Ellery, b. Buckingham Street, Charing Cross, London 15/5/1855.
She was the daughter of Isaac Ellery, Carrier, originally from Sutton Benger, Wilts. and his 2nd wife Amelia Clift, originally from Camberwell, Surrey.
Jane Sophia was married Christ Church, Spitalfields, Whitechapel 11/1/1875 under the name of Eliza Jane Ellery, to Alfred Upton, a Market Porter, b. 1849-50, d. London 1891.
I can only find her in the 1891 census living in13 Paternoster Row, Spitalfields, London, aged 36, a widow and charwoman, with 3 children Mary Ann aged 8, Katerine aged 7, George aged 6 and her mother Amelia aged 70.
I wondered if she might have emigrated but have been unable to find anything.
Any help would be appreciated.

Have you considered she remarried ?
Just searching Upton 1891+ there are several possibilities under Sophia, Jane and Eliza.

Just looking at the 1891 census that you have
Amelia although listed as mother, surely must be mother-in-law - to have surname Upton?
Interesting birthplace for her too ...."On the High Seas" !!!

Thanks for your replies. I have just started researching this branch after leaving it for some years.
To be honest, for some reason it hadn't occurred to me that Jane Sophia might have remarried. But that is a distinct possibility as she was relatively young when widowed.
Also the details on her mother proved to be incorrect on the 1891 census. I did a lot of research work witha prof. researcher some years ago, and the mother was born Amelia Clift in 1822 at Camberwell, Surrey.
This evening on FREE BMD I found ref. to the births of her children Mary Ann in 1880; Kitty in 1882 & George in 1884. I also found a Kitty Upton living as a boarder @ 41 Fanshaw Street, Shoreditch. In FREEBMD there is also ref. to a Kitty Upton marrying either Herbert Charles McCarthy or Charles Edward Ingram @ Shoreditch 1905.
