Hi,
Wonder if anyone can help?
Dr John Ellery (1786-1835), from Cranley, Surrey, had 9 children from his 1st wife Sarah Hulce, d. 1824. He had 7 children from his 2nd wife Caroline Potter (1793-1866).
I'm trying to find out what happened to James b. 1816, Emma b. 1817 & Henry b. 1821. James & Henry were mentioned in Dr John's will 1836, but can find nothing after that.
From the 2nd marriage, Robert Lewis John 1827, Frederick 1828, George 1830 & Sidney William 1833 survived to adulthood. Robert & Sidney emigrated to Victoria, Australia where Robert became Astronomer General, Victoria.
Does anyone have any info on James, Emma, Henry, Frederick or George?
Caroline, Dr John's 2nd wife was living in St Pancras Parish, London 1861 with her yst son Sidney and a dau-in-law Emily L. Ellery, a widow, aged 29, b. London. Unable to find what son she was the widow of.
Any help apprecaited.

Thanks for your reply. Yes, I've located Dr John Ellery, his 2 wives and all their various children, but I cannot find out what happened to James, Emma & Henry from the 1st marriage or Frederick & George from the 2nd.
Dr John E. was a well known doctor living in Cranley. There is a gravestone to the family in the churchyard there.
He marr. Sarah Hulce in London 1808, she d. Cranley 1824. They had Eliza Maria (1809-unm 1897); John Edward Harley (1811-16); Sarah, a schoolmistress (1813-unm 1880); Caroline (1814-29); JAMES (b. 1816); EMMA (b. 1817); John (1818-19); Edward (b&d 1820); & HENRY (b. 1821).
He then marr. Caroline Potter in Cranley 1825. They had Louisa (b&d 1826); Robert Lewis John, Astronomer General of Victoria, Australia (1827-1909); FREDERICK (b. 1828), alive in 1841 census; Agnes Mary (1829-30); GEORGE (b. 1830, alive 1841 living in Cranley with Frederick & his mother's sister Jane Potter; Sidney William (b. 1833, emigrated to Australia with Robert & had family there); & Mary Catherine (b&d 1835).
I too have noted the St Pancras death of a George Ellery in 1859. I suppose I should order that to check if it is him. I've a feeling the others might have emigrated but I can find nothing remotely matching their details on the immigrant records on Ancestry, etc.
Dr John's will dated 1836 makes mention of his own yr brother Dr Jacob Ellery, his 2nd wife Caroline, and James and Henry are the only children mentioned, although Eliza Maria, Sarah, Robert, George & Sidney were definitely alive at the time. I suppose they were ommitted because they were daughters & minors!

Have you checked the Death Duty Registers held at The National Archives for Dr John's will?

'The registers in IR 26 between 1796 and 1903 include information not found elsewhere. They show what happened to someone's personal estate (not freehold) after death; and what it was actually worth, excluding debts and expenses. They can give the name of the deceased, with address and last occupation, the date of the will, the place and date of probate, the names, addresses and occupations of the executors, and details of estates, legacies, trustees, legatees, annuities and the duty paid. They can also give the date of death, and information about the people who received bequests (beneficiaries), or who were the next-of-kin, such as exact relationship to the deceased. Tax was not payable on bequests to people within a closely defined family circle, and as a result the family relationship was often noted in the registers. In 1796, tax was not payable on bequests to offspring, spouse, parents and grandparents. In 1805, the exemption was restricted to spouse and parents. From 1815, only bequests to the spouse were exempt from paying tax. Because the registers could be annotated for many years after the first entry, they can include information such as dates of death of spouse; dates of death or marriage of beneficiaries; births of posthumous children and grandchildren; change of address; references to law suits, cross references to other entries, etc. If any of the estate was left in trust before 1852, look at the Reversionary Registers as well.'
Have you also checked to see whether there are any later Ellery wills (post 1858) held by the Probate Service which might give further information?

I had found the mention of Jacob Ellery & John Ellery during a Google search & various burials for young Ellery's in Cranleigh. Have you found Caroline in 1841? As Frederick & George are with their aunt in Cranleigh in 1841 might we assume Caroline has moved up to London by this time?
