Huck family
« on: Wednesday 24 June 09 16:32 UTC (UK) »

As family history goes, I’ve not got very far back before I’ve hit my brickwall…I am hoping that someone will come up with some sensible ideas for me, which is why I’m writing here today…. I have a GGGrandfather whose name was Richard Huck, but that is as far as I can get. He was born about 1834 in Whinfell, Westmorland and in the 1841 census he is living in How Stone, Whinfell with another Richard Huck aged 65 who’s a farmer and Margaret Huck aged 25. In the 1851 census he is living with a family in Burrow with Burrow as a farm servant. By 1861 he is married and living with his wife and two boys…. I also have his marriage certificate to Elizabeth Wilson, which says that his father is John Morris!!! Now, because there are no ‘relationships’ stated on the 1841 census and this John Morris mentioned on his marriage certificate could be his step father or his biological father…there are a many possibilities, (I can think of several connotations to what information I have!!! (Some with tongue in cheek  Shocked and others less so!!! Undecided)… What I could do with ideally, is his christening information don’t you think? BUT were would I find that? It is not on IGI or any other place I can find on the computer….I don’t live near by and I believe that the information is being held by someone who volunteered to transcribe the info 2 years or more ago!! Any sensible ideas from folks would be welcome.

Interesting!   My initial thought is that he was Margaret's son - she could be up to 29 and have had him in her early 20s.  Just speculation but have you followed her through to see if, and who, she marries?   It is most unusual for illegitimate children to give a different surname for their father as usually they try to hide it by making up a John "Huck" or whatever.  The fact that you have a different name is a good clue.    Anyone locally in 1841 with that name?
The first step might be to see if there are any parish relief records surviving.  Bastardy Bonds etc.
Which records do you mean are being held by a transcriber?   Kendal Record office will have all the local parishes on film and you can also order them through your local LDS family history centre.  They are worldwide and listed on www.familysearch.org   They have nearly all parishes - not just those covered by the IGI and they are ordered in from Salt Lake City if there isn't a copy in the UK.

I would agree that your first stop is the PRs, and the nearest church to Whinfell is at Grayrigg. Other parish entries are known to provide information about a 'supposed father'.

Kendal Record Office may do a quick search (10 mins work) for free, so they should be able to search the film for you.

I have some missing Morris' born in the Kendal area in the late 18th century. I hope he's not a decendent!!

Thank you both for your help...really appreciated and gives me ideas for other directions in my hunt. I have tried to find a farmer John Morris (occupation given on Richard's marriage cert) with a wife called Margaret, but with no success and even if I did find one I couldn't be 100% sure it was the correct couple as both the surname Morris or Christian name of Margaret are rather popular. Richard (I guess to be Margaret's son) wouldn't have been with them by then as he was living as a boarder in 1851 and head of his family in 1861.

I'll look into the bastardy bonds Andrea...great idea except I have to confess that I dread tackling Kendal RO  Sad (as I've always had a negative response from them over several queries) pity it wasn't Norfolk as I've found them so helpful in the past  Cheesy

I'll also look around Grayrigg...thanks for that tip Chris...this is where local knowledge is so helpful.
