This is a somewhat misleading recommendation, if I might venture an opinion.

Although the book itself is very interesting (I haven't read it all!) it doesn't contain the records but rather an account of what records were available at the time of writing.

The purpose of the book seems to have been to persuade the authorities to set up a proper BMD record nationally.

Nevertheless interesting

This can be a very helpful resource to consult if you know a family was in an area (up to 1850) and can't find them.  Most parishes have quotes from the register custodian detailing what and what is not covered as to BMDs:  it is surprising how many state, things like, "entries were not by any means regularly maintained."

It could help some of us decide when to stop looking for an entry we "know should be there".
