WINSER & EARLE families Newton Abbott are 1810 and ealier
« on: Wednesday 24 June 09 18:04 UTC (UK) »

Hi, Related or not is there anyone who can assist me with this family group?
I AM related to John Winser and his wife Elizabeth Rich, are you?, do you know anyone who is?
John was born abt 1810 in/near Chagford (census detail)
Elizabeth was born abt 1804 Ogwell
They settled for a time in Highweek, where their son Charles was born Dec 1842. They did have other children.
I can't find a marriage so tracing either line back any further is not likely.
Can you help, PLEASE?
The spelling for Winser canges to Winsor

The Devon FHS will supply marriage & baptism indices by surname. I would suggest asking for WIN*R to allow for spelling variants. Go to their website at http://www.devonfhs.org.uk/indexes.htm for details.
In addition, the online parish clerks project can help you. John & Elizabeth's daughter Maria was born at Torbryan - there is an OPC for the parish - see http://genuki.cs.ncl.ac.uk/DEV/Torbryan/index.html for details. Look-ups are free.
John WINSOR's baptism is shown at Chagford 11 Dec 1808, son of John & Susanna. His parents married there just before the baptism on 30 Aug 1808, mother's name Susanna KNAPMAN.
Elizabeth EARLE (you state RICH, but I think she relates to your ELIOT request) could have been baptised at either East or West OGWELL - again there is an OPC for these 2 parishes see:

Hello dob7

My apologies to you and other readers of the original post you are quite correct the name should read as ELIZABETH EARLE.
Thankyou for the Knapman  reference, I did find this name in a search on the IGI but wasn't convinced at the time, on a previous occasion using IGI I jumped too soon and subsequently found using parish records (norfolk) that I had got the wrong people.
I WILL try the OPC in due course and let you know how I do, but to all other readers of this reply/post I would still welcome your assistance
Thanks for YOUR help to date dob

Hi  DOB7

Thanks for the Knapman reference, I've found a ref' to it on the IGI but the problem now is that the details for Susanna are vague and there are a number of Susanna Knapmans.
Which one is she?
Each new fact found also seems to lead to a new brick wall that I have to get over. Its getting harder and harder

Try contacting the Devon Record Office and asking them for a transcription of the marriage - it should give parish of origin and witnesses' names which may be clues.

To Dob7

Thanks for tip, I'll do that, of course it will take a bit of time before they get back to me so it will be a while before i can inform you if anything has been found by them.

ALL other sources from other readers  would be greatly appreciated

Once again, thanks DOB

Actually, if you e-mail them, they usually reply within a few days.
