george northing- grantham
« on: Wednesday 24 June 09 18:49 UTC (UK) »

hi

I have just discovered that my ggg aunt mary ann johnson(nee farmer) from Hatfield hertford turned up in Grantham in 1883 living as the wife of George Northing even though she was still married to Joseph johnson. On the 1891 census Joseph claims to be still married but by 1901 he has married the widow from next door. Is there anyone doing the Northing family line and can anyone locate a marriage for George and Mary. I know that George died in 1904 and Mary passed away in 1940 in Grantham never returning to her family in hertfordshire.

thanks

Hi Jackie

In the 1891 census RG 12 Piece 2555 Folio 8 page 10 Corby there is:

George Northing aged  Head  1857   Ag Lab born Welby Linc
Mary A Northing  aged  wife   1862                        Hatfield Herts

There are 4 children: Sarah J Northing 1880 born Hatfield
Joseph J Northing 1883 born Hatfield
Florence A Northing 1885 born Colsterworth
Edith N Northing       1889 born Wing Rutland

Is this the family? If so did Mary leave her first husband and take the 2 children with her?

The only George Northing marriage seems to be in 1893 Grantham but to a Rhoda Maria Panks. Chances are George and Mary didn't marry though.

Wouldn't you like to know what really happened!!

Hi Jackie and Jan,
it doesn't look as though Joseph married either - suppose he couldn't do really  Wink.
As you say, it makes you wonder what happened. It's a long way from Grantham to Hatfield- or would have been and it all seems to have happened in a relatively short space of time.

Just looked in the 1881 census and Mary Ann is with her husband Joseph Johnson and daughter Sarah Johnson (1) lodging at the Prince of Wales public House Union Street Hatfield. Perhaps she ran away with one of the customers!

The second child Joseph was born in 1883, so she either left  her husband soon after his birth, or Joseph wasn't his father, found out and turned her out or ...... you could go on and on wondering. As you say quite a distance from Hatfield to Grantham then.

It's a long way from Grantham to Hatfield ...

They're both towns on the Great North Road.
