RATTENBURY family Help, Please
« on: Wednesday 24 June 09 18:53 UTC (UK) »

A 3rd branch from Devon.  I am trying to find details of my g,g,g,g, grandfather JOSEPH RATTENBURY he was born 1791 or possibly earlier in or near Dunkswell, he married and had at least 3 children one of which was Jane, my ggg grand mother.   Joseph was some how related to a family called Taprell ( or similar spelling) He is living as a widower in 1851 with his sister-in-law Jane Taprell, can anyone help me find Joseph and his family. It is thought that his wife was called Mary but this is not certain, however what is certain is that she died at the Christmas time in the 1840's.
Joseph Rattenbury is a mystery, can you help me go back futher in time?

I would hazard a guess that Jane TAPRELL was the sister of Joseph's wife. Given that Jane was born in Bishopsteignton - contact the OPC for the parish - see http://genuki.cs.ncl.ac.uk/DEV/BishopsTeignton/ for details. (Scroll down to genealogy)

Thanks for the info, I'll contact "them" in due course and let you know if it helps in my search.
Help from other readers of this post/reply would still be appreciated, the more irons in the fire the better

I have Emma Rattenbury in my line, born in Devon 1875 and married Frederick Boobier  1904. Maybe Emma was from his 2nd marriage.

Probably not, because he would have been at least 84 when she was born!  Smiley

FREEBMD states that Emma's name was ROTTENBURY when she married, and the 1881 census confirms that. SHe was born in the September qtr 1874, registered as Emma ELizabeth ROTTENBURY, Barnstaple district vol 5b page 454.

Hi, I feel that it is unlikely that "your" Emma is directly related to Joseph, a niece perhaps?
The Rattenburys I have are Joseph & wife Mary, she died in Dec 1845 ( the week of Xmas).  They had at least 3 children 2 girls Jane and Mary Ann and 1 boy (name unknown).  The family holds a letter which identifies a child as "billy", but his age is unknown. Joseph is stated has holding "the little lads hand". Could he be a child of Joseph & Mary or is he a grand child.  There is also mention of 2 children going to be baptized in the last week of Dec 1845 or first week of Jan 1846, one IS Josephs grand child, the parents being Jane Jones(nee Rattenbury) and William Jones.

To DOB7.
Thanks for your lookup, it is a bit of a coincidence that the name William turns up. Is it poss' that this is the "Billy", time will tell.
To other readers.  It is not unsual to have different spellings for the same people

Hi DOB7

Thank you for the tip about using the OPC, it has been VERY useful with an other branch of my family I would go so far as to say that it is a must for all.  If I had known of it earlier it is likely I wouldn't have pulled so much hair out.
The OPC was a godsend, many thanks

Sorry, senior moment, wasn't thinking straight!

I haven't done any research on Emma , found her for the 1st time on 1911 census where it says she was born in Exeter.

Hi Jan

I have a printout of the 1841 census, thank you.
What I would like to ask you and all other readers of this thread is this; Joseph & Mary Rattenbury had a son but I cannot find any info about him.  I have a copy of a letter dated 1845 from Joseph to his daughter Jane ( known now as Mrs Jones )  the letter concerns the death of Josephs wife Mary, importantly though it indicates that there IS a brother but not what his name is.  Is there any one out ther who can help?

The Taprell connection is still eluding me, Joseph in 1851 is living with his sister-in-law Jane Taprell and 2 others. can any one help with Jane's marriage/birth details?

THANK YOU JAN for your posts to date

Thanks too to ALL other contributors,  I still seek more info, if it exists.
