ELLIOTT & RICH famillies in/near Stoke Gabriel & Newton Abbott
« on: Wednesday 24 June 09 18:37 UTC (UK) »

Are you related to these names or have knowledge of them, can you help me trace my family further back?
John Eliot/Elliott was born abt 1807 Stoke Gabriel and married to Elizabeth Rich born abt 1810 Newton Abbott. They had Susanna born July 1846 Wolborough, this is my line.  Some other children were John, Robert, Edwin and Sarah Ann. The Elliott's then wed into the Winsor line, hence the other post.
Some where in the history is mention of being a keeper of lodgings house in/near Newton A'.  Is there anyone out there with knowledge of these names, I would love to find distant relations and/or info of earlier dates.

Hi taffy

Welcome to Rootschat Cheesy

Do you already a have them on the various censuses? If not let me know and I will post details - I see John was a shoemaker and they are running the lodging house in Newton Abbott in 1861. They seem to have had a lot more children than you mention.

Hi Janan

Thanks for the reply

It would appear that you have found the right family group in the census's, and I do have some printouts for them but not all.  My hope is to trace the families/lines far enough back that the info found can not be derived from the census, things like their actual birth dates or the parents detail etc.

I will look at/take any help which is offered. I hope that other readers to this post/reply can also assist

Hi

Let me know which censuses you still need and I will post them.

Now to baptisms

Have you seen this one?

John Elliot  born 20 OCT 1806    christened 2 NOV 1806   in   Stoke Gabriel parents William Elliot and Susanna

Looks good especially as he has daughter Susanna

And this looks like marriage for his parents

William Elliot to Susanna Blackler      11 OCT 1792      Stoke Gabriel

I found it on this site which allows you to search the IGI (International Genealogical Index) by parish - only records directly extracted from parish records by the Mormons are included. They are reliable, bar the odd transcription error, but don't include extra info the original parish records may have.

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hughwallis/

This site includes other submitted records and the 1881 census

http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=igi/search_IGI.asp&clear_form=true

The IGI is your best starting point for pre 1837 records but does not include all parishes/years and very few burials.

If you enter William Elliot and Susanna in the father and mother boxes on right but nothing in boxes on left plus enter region, country and county you will then get any siblings for John.

Elizabeth Rich will be more difficult as Newton Abbott has not been extracted. Hopefully someone else will be able to help with her.

Happy hunting

Hi John

Thanks for your PM giving following extra info

"I have got John & Elizabeth Elliott in 1851 census but not in following years.
Found Elizabeth, now a widow in 1871.  Then in 1901 found Emma Elliott, who you will see in 1871 census is married to Edward Diggle but is now married to a William Cook ( the name Diggle did crop up in some old family letters/doc's, now long gone).
Haven't found other children."

I will have a look on other censuses

Hi Jan,

First thank you for the PM, it was kind of you.
Through another inquiry i was prompted to use OPC (on-line parish clerks) and found that it appear John Elliott's parents were William & Susanna.  This seem to fit quite nicely with the 1841 census details you have given and the June 25 posting.  Little bits are now coming together and I thank you for your help.

To other readers of this post,
I am still hoping to find the link between Joseph Rattenbury and his sister-in law Jane Taprell from Bishopsteignton.  Jane Taprell had 2 nephews William T. Way & Matthew Horwill  ( maybe TWAY and not T. Way)
