Prestwich Asylum
« on: Sunday 28 June 09 11:02 UTC (UK) »

Was wondering if there was anyone who could assist me in ascertaining whether a John Henry Ambrose was a patient at this Asylum in 1911.   If so are they are able to give me details of the reason for him being there.

He is listed as resident at an Institution at Prestwich in 1911 census, but not sure if this is the correct place.

His name is John Henry Ambrose b. 1846 Manchester, Confectioner, a Widower.

You will have to wait until January 1912 when they unveil the 'Lunatic...etc' column on the 1911 census form. This may give a clue. This is not covered by the Freedom of Information ruling that released the 1911 Cenus early. You could try the local records office. But I would not expect personal information like that to be available.

I know that any records that did survive are now held by Greater Manchester county records office. You will have to contact them for more infomation. I do know later inmates had photographs take on admission and up on leaving .
