How to approach finding a marriage
« on: Friday 07 August 09 23:19 UTC (UK) »

Hello all

I have just spent a very long afternoon in the Manchester Central Library and unfortunately got nowhere at all Cry I dropped my son off at the Velodrome for a days racing and then I pootled into the city centre, all eager.

I was looking for the marriage of Thomas Hindley who according to the 1851 census was born in Manchester, Lancashire. This ties in with an out of county note in the 1841 when he was in Yorkshire. His daughter was also listed exactly the same. I think his wife was called Sarah, hence looking for the marriage. It would appear he was born c1800 and I also looked for a baptism from 1799 to July 1800 (then ran out of time).

The staff suggested that I look in the records for Manchester Cathedral as this was the parish church at the time. His daughter Maria was born c 1825 and so I looked at all marriages for the Cathedral from 1820 thro' to 1826 incl. After I'm sure looking at a few thousand entries I didn't find the marriage.

I feel quite disappointed especially as I only get to Manchester a couple or so times a year. From discussions with other people in the reading room, there are apparantly several other churches they could have married in. Also of course they may have married somewhere completely different.

I was just wondering if anyone had any thoughts on how I might proceed.

Cheers

Hi

Daughter Maria married George Ledrew in 1844 in Yorkshire and 1851 just shows Manchester as her birthplace

Have you checked the Lancs OPC website?  It's down at the moment but keep trying

Hi again Carole

Yes, that is Maria my 3XGGrandma and so hence why I'm trying to trace her father.

I've not heard of the OPC before so thanks for that, I'll give it a try tomorrow.

I must go to bed now having driven 450 miles today and done all that searching!

Oh, just before I go though, would you know if Leigh? would have been considered as Manchester as I've just got a green leaf for Thomas on A*****ry?

Anyway thanks again

There is a Thomas Hindley marrying a Sarah Shawcross 21 April 1833 at Manchester Cathedral.
Found on the IGI   Familysearch site. Hope this may be the correct one.

Hi,

The Sarah Shawcross marriage looks good except that an1833 marriage doesn't fit very well with a child born in 1825 Huh Huh

Do you have a christening record for Maria?  I can't find anything on IGI.  Was she the first child of the marriage? The only child?

You say, "I think his wife was called Sarah." That  may be the problem.  IGI has marriage records for Thomas Hindley(s) in Lancashire in the appropriate time frame i.e. marriage taking place before 1825, but the wives are not named Sarah.

This may be a case where you need to find a christening record in order to be sure of the wife's first name.

I don't think the Shawcross marriage is correct purely down to the age etc although they could have married later than the birth? Thanks anyway though.

The only records I have for them are the 1841 and 1851 census returns in Hull stating Manchester plus Maria's marriage cert with her father Thomas being a baker.

I have taken, with the usual cautions, the wife's name to be Sarah from the 1841 census. This seems likely as she was from out of county as well but of course, I could be wrong.

The site Carole has put me onto will hopefully provide the answer.

cheers

IGI has a Maria Hindle (sic) christened 28 March 1824 Hunslet Yorkshire.  parents: Thomas and Sarah.

Not too far fetched.  The date is correct and Thomas  et al seemed to have spent most of their lives in Yorkshire.

What about the possibility that Sarah was a 2nd wife.

A real Catch-22.  good luck
