Baylis,Bayless, Bayles, Bailey link????
« on: Wednesday 24 June 09 22:04 BST (UK) »

Hi,

Can anyone help with tracing a Daniel Baylis b.abt 1836 in Bethnal Green, I have his marriage cert and census details from 1861 but I can't find him before that.    His father was also Daniel.   In 1841 I found Daniel Bailey, parents Daniel and Eliza in Bethnal Green but am reluctant to use the info, as am not certain if there is a link between the different spellings.   Altho' in my records they have 3 different spellings for the surname.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

Hi and welcome to Roots Chat  Smiley

Since a large proportion of the population was illiterate in the 1800's, names tended to get written down as they were heard, so it's not unusual to get wide variations in the spelling.  If you look at the bottom of my post, you'll see one of my ancestors with the name of LEWIN has the name spelt at least 3 different ways.  All you can really do is to try to match the details of any children & spouse names, and try to find parish records of marriages or christenings that may help you determine if you have the right family.
