FamilySearch Community Trees ... just found my 27xgr-grandfather
« on: Friday 23 October 09 23:50 UTC (UK) »

Cheesy

FamilySearch have a new feature which they are calling Community Trees. Of interest for Welsh descendants is that it appears that someone has gone through books written by 18th-19th century antiquarians who had traced major Welsh families back to pre-1000 AD, and entered the names into a searchable database. The good thing is that the sources are quoted, and it points out where they conflict with each other.

The sources include (amongst many others):

'The British Genealogist: comprising the Gentry in Carmarthenshire, Cardiganshire, Pembrokeshire, Glamorganshire, Brecknockshire' etc, by Alcwyn Caryni Evans [1828-1902]

'The Golden Grove Books of Pedigrees,' compiled around 1765

'A History of Monmouthshire,' by Bradney

'Welsh Genealogies AD 1400-1500,' by Peter C. Bartrum

So ... one of my Breconshire lines apparently goes back to 970 AD — the paternal and maternal lines supposedly goes back to each of two sons b. 1000 AD, with the father as the common ancestor!   Wink  Heh, curiosity value only!

A tip on searching: patronymic names should be put into the First Name box, leaving the surname box blank, eg. Rhydderch ap Rhys, or even just ap or ab Rhys.

The database uses The Next Generation software which is not as forgiving as the usual LDS sites, so spelling is important — it takes time to find the knack.  Also the dates are mostly very wrong, eg. it said my 5xg grandfather was born 1670 when I know he was born 1725.  It's been useful though.  My 6xg grandfather was Howell LEWIS on his marriage bond, but Howell POWELL on his gravestone and it all made sense when today I found his father was Lewys ap Hywel.

The Gathering the Jewels website has many images from Volume 2 of the Golden Grove Pedigrees. 'Twould be a transcriber's nightmare!

I bet! Thanks for the wonderful links, though it took me a while to work out how you unearthed the Golden Grove pedigrees from the inscrutable menu.

I've edited the subject line of my first post to be more informative.

I'm still discovering fascinating family connections, although finding conflicts with what I already had is worrisome.  Next step will be to go through the NLW wills online (yet again!) and see who I can match up.
