Hi
My great uncle Harry Darling (born c 1882 in Hull) emigrated to Canada as a young man. He married in Winnipeg in 1914. He died in 1962 in Victoria BC. His obituary says he only lived in Victoria for 7 years - before that in Winnipeg, which I guess is where his children were born.
I'd like to find the marriage of one of his daughters. Her name was Margaret Darling - I'm assuming she was born within 10 years of her parents' marriage, in Winnipeg. Her father's obituary gives her married name as Mrs G E Engel of Ottawa, Ontario.
Again, I'm guessing Margaret married Mr Engel either in Winnipeg or Ottawa. Are there online resources for finding a marriage in Canada, if you only have the names, and no dates etc?
I did try some time ago, but had no success, so am keeping my fingers crossed that someone can point me in the right direction.
thanks' Lesley

There isn't a national data base for BMD's in Canada. It is by province but there is a sight that you can check for current listings of people with the last name Engel. There are many Engel's in the Ottawa area. www.canada411.ca Did the obituary give the name of the funeral home? You could try contacting the funeral home to see if they have more information they could give you.

Thanks for your reply valeriec.
I guess that as the death was in 1962 it's unlikely they'd keep records that long. I know I did spend ages a year or two ago trying to find these records, but gave up - your message has reminded me that one of the reasons was there were so many Engels (and from what I remember none had the right initials). I did try the site you suggest, but got really frustrated because I just didn't have enough info.
I've just come back to have another go, as sometimes new sites are posted on the Internet, that I might have missed, but other people know about.
And there's always that little bit of hope that someone in Canada could be researching the same family and read Rootschat. Or maybe I'll have to accept this is one of those brickwalls that'll never come down!
Thanks again for your help. Lesley

In the 1916 census of the prairie provinces (Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba) there are 2 possibilities for Harry Darling born England. The one living in North Battleford is married to Rhoda Lydia and already has a 2 year old child Joseph William plus the baby Thomas John.
Perhaps a better choice would be the Harry Darling living in Winnipeg at 274 Crescent. He is 35, emmigration year 1906, a contractor builder. His wife is Edith, 25 emmigration year 1910. Edith was also born in England.

H. Darling, 24, bricklayer, bound for Winnipeg sailed from Liverpool to Halifax N.S./St. John N.B. (the boat was apparently docking at both locations). Arrived 13 April 1906 aboard the Victorian.
Definitely not related to you original enquiry but it does link to the 1916 census as it shows his arrival was 1906.

A link to the Ottawa library Ask a Question page. You know Margaret and her husband were living in Ottawa in 1962. You could ask the library to search forward in time for the husband's name and also backwards in time which might help to establish a marriage date.

There is an online family tree created in 2005 that has information on Harry's daughters. It shows that Margaret was living at that time. There is an email contact and address listed. Hopefully you can find some answers from this source.

Debbie, you definitely found the correct family, and there are a lot of very hopeful links in your messages. I'm printing off the whole thread, and going to try the links later today.
I'm very grateful for your help. Thank you again. Lesley

Found these sites that may be helpful to you but the family tree looks like your best bet. Registration of deaths for British Columbia from 1872-1988 are held by the British columbia archives and are on microfilm. The Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness website does obituary lookups. http://www.raogk.org Also you may be able to order the death certificate for Harry and gain more info as to dates, parents, burial place, etc. that can help in your other search. http://www.vs.gov.bc.ca/death/index.html

Hi again Debbie and Valeriec
I've just been through your emails and once again I can only say how grateful I am for all the trouble you've taken. I did spend a lot of time on this branch of the family some time ago, which is when I obtained Harry's death certificate, and found his obituary. I'd also seen the family tree and tried to contact the owner, unsuccessfully.
However your obituary of David Craven has added quite a lot to my research, and I have sent for Margaret's obit in the hope it could be the correct person. I also left my email address on the guest page of David's obit, in the hope that maybe one of the family will read it and get in touch.
So once again I'd like to say thank you. You have been a great help. Lesley
