I am trying to find the (B) of Henry Bates (B) 1845 in Godmanchester this reference I have found on the 1881 census for Henry Bates at Grand Shaft Barracks Western Heights Dover
HOUGHAM KENT Sergt Infantry.

Thank you Suzard for the 1851/61 census of the Bates family, Harry obviously (D) young.

Rosie99 There is no connection to the Marshall family, it is just strange that my son in laws family also came from this area and that both a Marshall and a Bates work for a Cambridge College.
