Hi Mackiwi
I had my first and rather fleeting visit to Archives Wellington earlier in the year and noticed an amazing number of NZ Railway records there. I was looking through some of the annual staff volumes for Traffic Branch and I think they went back to those early years. They list the staff, their position, year they joined and their grading. The track and maintenance are possibly under Engineers but I think they are probably in the same books. Also there are many drawers of photographs.
If that doesn't help you this time, it may be of interest to others anyway. I would like to have a better look myself on another visit.

Hi mare,
It's the days when they were still building the railway lines so it's part of our history. It has been viewed on line but the person who saw it can't remember where
I'm in the Auckland area so hoping desperately that someone has come across it.

Ah yes Bren
.... was just about to suggest Puke Ariki (for info on Taranaki railway).
BUT ... just a bit puzzled MacKiwi
First of all you said you are looking to find names of railway workers ... and now you're mentioning "railway history articles" ??
GOOGLE ... (is your best friend) !
Try this in search box ... "building nz railways + Taranaki / + king country" ...

Hi Mackiwi
Some advice from a long term Railway employee. Every year the Dept and then the Corporation published a List of Staff. It was known as the D3, all Railway forms were numbered. The staff are listed by Branch and grading, showing name, designation, location , rates of pay, date joined and in some years other info. In the final years it included month and year of birth for example. These were the people who RAN the Railways, not the people who BUILT them. The builders were employees of the Public Works Dept (Ministry of Works), or employed by local contractors. Sure there were Railway Civil Engineers involved but only in an advisory sort of capacity, perhaps Clerks of Works.
There were a number of Branches within Railways. The Traffic branch ran the trains and staffed them, except for the drivers. The Way and Works Branch was the civil engineering branch that maintained the track and buildings, the Mechanical Branch maintained the rolling stock, locomotives and supplied the engine drivers. Road Services Branch ran the buses and freight carrying trucks, Stores branch bought the bits required and the Refreshment Branch bought and sold the pies. The names of these Branches sometimes changed over the years.
Temporary staff were not included in the D3, and many people were temporary for their whole 40 year career! You need to bear that in mind.
If you want to find out who actually built the tunnels etc you will need to look at books on Railway history in the area you are concerned about or check out Papers Past for contract details in local newspapers. There are Railway fanatics in every part of NZ. Go looking for them because many of them know these details, as well as the number of right angles in a Dg loco's fuel tank.

Thank you all for suggestions, but I am not having any luck yet.
Lucy sorry to confuse you. Family actually worked building the original railway lines between 1900 & 1908 after they arrived here from Scotland.

Hi Mackiwi
Mmmm ... just as "alamar" above, has suggested, I too had considered that those actually building the railways, tunnels etc. were more likely to have been "contractors".
Are you talking about a "family group" who were all employed in this line of work ... (might they have run a business ?) ... or is it just one or two persons names you are seeking ?

2 brothers who arrived here separately and would just have been working as labourers. When the rail was finished in 1908 they both qualified to for the land ballot in the Taranaki Ballots.
