Details given on a coroners report?
« on: Thursday 25 June 09 07:04 BST (UK) »

On the death certificate of my great grandfather Patrick or Michael or any combination! Higgins,  dated 10 Dec 1911 Portsmouth, he was aged 79 The cause of death given was pneumonia following a fall, In the informants panel it states "Certificate received from T D Broomsded? Coroner for Portsmouth, Inquest held Dec 11th 1911"
I know Patrick was born in Ireland, Galway I believe and so where many others with that name! my question is Would the report of the inquest give his birthdate? can I obtain a copy of the report? if so how and from where? Hope this is the right forum for this type of query.
Thank you Dennis

Hello,

There's a little book that may be of help - there's one on Amazon here http://www.amazon.com/Coroners-Records-England-Wales-2nd/dp/0806315628 which gives details of where coroners reports are held if they exist.

It's possible that someone on here may have a copy if you post a look up request?

As to wether it'll have the date of birth on it, I'm not sure if it would for definite but should give an age.  Smiley

The other place to look for information is the local (Portsmouth ) newspaper from the first half of Dec 1911.  Often newspapers published details of Coroner's reports.  Obviously, murders and suicides would have made for a more exciting story than an elderly chap dying after a fall, but you may find something reported, especially if he was known locally for some reason.  It's possible too that someone may have written an obituary or published funeral details for him.

I'm afraid you are going to have to go down the local newspaper route.  Coroners' records for Hampshire have by and large not survived.  Those for Portsmouth and surrounding area only date from 1953.

What Nell has just said saves you a lot of wasted effort.

If you can get a close date for his death maybe you can ask the Portsmouth Library is they have archived newspapers for that period and would they do a llokup and scan the item for you.

let us know how you get on,

Ahhh that's a shame (and for me too, I've got lots of ancestors from Pompey!) but on the other hand I've got a very detailed Portsmouth newspaper article from 1894 relating to the death of my ggg grandfather so fingers crossed for you!

Another clutched straw that the clutch missed, Thank you all for your efforts I doubt if the newspaper report if there was one would have his date of birth, another spanner in the works is the fact that they do not have the Pompey newspapers in Melbourne Victoria. I have to tread a bit careful with Patrick Higgins down here as he was a senior warder in the convict prison in Portsmouth Dockyard and there might be a family or three with long memories !!!

Hi
My GGG Grandfather drowned at Wooloomooloo in Sydney in 1876..It was a really detailed report (I looked up the Sydney Morning Herald) It had references to his family and where he was living.. so you never know what information it might bring up.  It is worth an email to the local library..they may do you a favour and email it to you...
cheers
