Is there a knighthoods database?
« on: Thursday 25 June 09 06:18 UTC (UK) »

I'm trying to resolve an issue that I thought would be easier than it's proving.  There was a legal case in 1833, Hamilton v Williams, in which a Sir John Hamilton was a witness.  The case and his testimony was quoted extensively also in a later (1844) legal case, Courtney v Williams.  (Accounts of the trials can be found on Google Books).  I'd like to pin down down who this Sir John Hamilton was.

He was described in the 1844 case as the brother of Robert Hamilton who in turn was described as a first cousin of Aldborough Richardson, who is in my family tree (online at Roots.com Worldconnect and Ancestry).

I can find only one Sir John Hamilton who was around at the time, the Lieutenant-Colonel 1755-1835 (see Wikipedia).  He seems a little old to have been the right person and Debretts doesn't record any living brother Robert.

Can anyone suggest a database or other source where I could check for any other John Hamiltons who were knighted?

Best wishes

Don't know if Burke's is any better than Debretts.  Undecided

Try searching in the London Gazette

www.gazettes-online.co.uk

You could also request a search in The Times online archives.

The Times in 1833 states that the initial lawsuit was instigated by Mr John Hamilton.  If this is the chap, then he may have been created a baronet by 1844, hence the title.

Looking at a notice in the Gazette, a David Hamilton seems to have had the money that was left to Robert Hamilton in the will of Aldborough Richardson.  David Hamilton went bankrupt.

Have a look here:

I've checked other possible places, but can't find a suitable candidate.  Sad

Thanks for your message, Nell.  This is the right John Hamilton - he was also referred to in the contested will in 1825 (of Aldborough Richardson) as plain John Hamilton.

Intriguingly the reporting I've seen of the later contesting of Richardson's will (Courtney v Williams, 1844) refers to him as Sir John Hamilton but they seem to be quoting the earlier 1833 court case.

I tried the London Gazette but couldn't find any signs of knighthoods being conferred on John Hamiltons (aside from one in 1835 who was born in 1802 - and John Hamilton said he knew him for twenty years before his death - seems unlikely if not inconceivable).

Best wishes
