I am hoping for some help, and a better brain than mine to help solve a prob, that's driving me insane! Thomas Henry Beal, married Violet Maud Gribble in 1889 in Exeter.(she's obviously iilegitamate..no parent shown on marriage certificate). Her mother I believe to be Eliza Gribble who is buried in our family plot, and never married. In the 1911 census she shows up in Bristol, as a widow (now spelt Bale) age 37, living with Thomas Henry Bale, (my Grandfather) who is single just before he married my Grandmother. She is not his mother (who was Rosa Bale nee Mann). As well as this, the Thomas Henry Beal she married, is shown on the 1901 census, living in Marylebone London, with another wife (Ellen). He's 39, she's 21. all the criteria fit, age, occupation, and D.O.B. Place of birth. and he has 11 year old Thomas Henry with him, (my grandfather!) Violet Maud is shown on the 1901 census, as a visitor in Bristol, with M shown, as if she is married? Any ideas or explanations as why this should be??? Help needed PLEASE!

I'm a bit confused by some of this, but here is what I found. In 1881, Violet Maud GRIBBLE is shown as Maud: RG11/2152 Folio 5 page 3 Paragon Pl. Exeter Holy Trinity John MANN Head M 60 Shoe Maker b. Collumpton, Devon Jane MANN Wife M 61 b. Plymouth, Devon Harriett Jane DUNLEY Wifes Daur U 33 b. Exeter, Devon Maud GRIBBLE Nurse Child 8 Scholar b. Exeter, Devon John S. DUNLEY Wifes Son M Shoe Maker 36 b.Exeter, Devon Eliza DUNLEY Wife Of Son M 30 b. Tiverton, Devon Lucy DUNLEY Daur 9 Scholar b. Exeter, Devon Nathaniel PIDGEON Lodger W 73 b. Powderham, Devon Sarah Ann COLEY Lodger M 21 Lace Maker b. Sidbury, Devon
Her mother, ELiza GRIBBLE appreats to have been born ca 1851 in Kenn, DEvon, and in 1881 is working as a nurse in the Wonford Hospital for the Insane. Onto 1901, I found a Thomas H BALE aged 39 living in Bristol, son Thomas W BALE, wife Mary J BALE. I can't find Violet BALE in 1901 in Bristol.

Thanks for looking that up!...I already knew Violet Maud was a Nurse child (thanks to some help from a Rootschatter previously!) BUT, what I am confused with, is how I have a marriage certificate for 1889, showing her marrying Thomas Henry Beal, but I have a birth certicate for his son, born in 1890, with a different mother! (Rosa Bale nee Mann) ? In the 1901 census Thomas Henry is now in London Marylebone, with yet another wife (Ellen age 21)....he obviously liked them younger then as he was 39 by then. Violet is shown on the 1901 census as a 'visitor' in Bristol. but the Transcriber listed it as 'Deale' (it is really bad writing! My problem is...all the ages, occupation, place of birth, etc, point to it being the same Thomas Henry Beal(e), but the wives don't tally!
thanks for your help

gosh...hadn't thought of that one! Thanks, i'll do some digging! James Mann was a witness at the wedding in 1889, so there certainly might be some tie-in.
Thanks again
