I had a distant relative named Louis Hahn. He was born in Carcoar, NSW, Australia around 1855. His parents were Engelbert (or Englebert) Hahn and Anna Aloisia Theresa Maria Kremer. Louis worked as a publican at Bathurst, NSW around the year 1890. He went bankrupt in 1891 and sometime later he reportedly moved to New Zealand, leaving his wife Margaret Philomena Hahn (nee Treanor) in Australia. They did not have any children. I’m trying to find any confirmation of his time in New Zealand.
There were several men named Louis Hahn in NZ around 1910 to 1920. The most likely is a Louis Hahn who was a hotel keeper in the Westland district of the South Island. From hotel licence records, he was hotel keeper of the Grey Valley hotel around 1909-1910 and hotel keeper of the Paroa Hotel around 1910-1914. However in 1914 he filed for bankruptcy and lost his hotel keepers licence. He was released from bankruptcy in 1921.
This same Louis Hahn appears in the 1910 NZ Post Office Directory at Ngahere (Grey Valley).
I’m specifically searching for any record which could confirm the birth date, place of birth or nationality of this Louis Hahn from Westland district.
I have searched the online NZ death indexes for any Louis Hahn born around 1855 but I can only find a painter from Memel, Germany who lived near Christchurch (index no. 1926/8842). This is definitely not the correct person.
Often the Hahn surname is misspelt or mis-transcribed. The NZ online death index search tool requires the surname to be specified so it’s quite difficult to find a misspelt name.
Anyway, I’d much appreciate any suggestion towards linking the hotel keeper Louis Hahn of Westland District to the hotel keeper Louis Hahn born in Australia around 1855.
Best regards, CM

Hi CM
Hmm ... I wonder if this newspaper article might rule out, the "Louis HAHN - Publican at Westland".
http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/
Grey River Argus - 3 February 1913 - Page 6 - "Drowning Fatality" :
The article makes reference to a "Jack HAHN" who is the brother of the licencee of the Paroa Hotel.
* Did the Louis HAHN you are seeking, have a brother named Jack ... or John ?

Dear all,
Thank you very much for your responses. They do seem to rule out any link between the hotel keeper Louis Hahn from Westland and the hotel keeper Louis Hahn from Carcoar, NSW, Australia. Quite a coincidence though that they were both hotel keepers and both went bankrupt.
Louis Hahn's parents came to Carcoar, Australia from Eltville in the Rhineland as assisted immigrants around 1850. Whilst Louis had many Hahn relations in NSW I've never heard of any from NZ. Both his Hahn uncles immigrated to NSW. Louis did have a brother named John but he survived until 1946. In fact Louis is the only sibling that we can't trace. By the way, the Carcoar Hahns were Catholic.
I saw in the 1908 NZ electoral rolls that there was a bushman named Louis Hahn and relations at Baxter's Siding in Grey electorate but again I doubt that this would be the Louis Hahn from Carcoar, NSW.
I'll keep looking...
Thanks again for your assistance.
Best regards, CM
