*COMPLETED* Did 38 GIBSON STREET, ARDWICK exist in 1901?
« on: Thursday 25 June 09 12:23 UTC (UK) »

Hi,

I'm wondering if 38 GIBSON STREET, ARDWICK (Manchester), Lancashire existed in 1901.

If so I'm hoping the address appears on the 1901 census as I'd be very interested to know who was living there.

On the 22/01/1905 I have a Mary Elizabeth WHITEHEAD (a widow) living at the above address and I'm trying to find her on the 1901 census.

Mary Elizabeth's maiden name was very likely BOULTON and she married at least twice (perhaps three times), once to a WHITEHEAD and once to a MOORE.

Hoping someone reading can turn either Gibson Street or Mary Elizabeth up on the 1901 census.

Many thanks for reading, best wishes, Rowan Tree  Smiley

Hi Ricky,

Sorry - What was I thinking  Roll Eyes

Going of her 1905 marriage cert. Mary Elizabeth was born c. 1857/58
Going of the 1911 census Mary Elizabeth was born c. 1854/55 in Manchester.

On the marriage cert. Mary gives her name as Mary Elizabeth Whitehead, widow, father: James Boulton, hardware dealer.

There are pictures of Gibson Street in the Manchester Archives and images site.
One was 1899, so it looks like it was there in 1901!

Hi Rowan Tree

1901 according to the census route, 38 Gibson street, it should be in South Manchester, Ardwick, district 16, but been through the census sheets and couldnt see it Huh Huh

Ill try and see if its on any of the others for that area

Hi Kooky - thanks for your post  Smiley

You know I'm not sure that it does help but thanks all the same  Wink.

Mary Elizabeth and her husband, Valentine Moore were living at 14 Cherryton Street, Ardwick on the 1911 census.

Valentine died 11/06/1930 at 142 Bedford Street, Hulme. Although I'm not sure when Mary Elizabeth died (any suggestions welcome) I thought perhaps she died before Valentine as she didn't register her husbands death. Either way, I'm guessing she would have long since been gone by 1959 as this would have made her over 100 years old.

Best Wishes, Rowan Tree  Smiley

P.S. Kooky = Just read your latest post. I'm loving the detective work. This is excellent. Is there a way I can search addresses for the 1901 census?

Thanks for that Ricky  Cheesy

I'm made up to know Gibson Street was definitely in existence in 1901 - now it's just a case of turning it up on the census.

I'm sure that sounds a lot simpler than it actually is.

Excellent work team. TTFN, Rowan Tree  Cheesy

Hey gang - I think I've just had a break-through,

Check out the following census:

Source Citation: Class RG13; Piece 3697; Folio 167; Page 7.
Lloyd Street, Chorlton upon Medlock, South Manchester
Head - Julius Whitehead - 48 (c. 1853) - Little Sodbury, Yorkshire - Licensed Victualler
Wife - Mary E Whitehead - 50 (c. 1851) - Manchester

Valentine Moore (the man Mary Elizabeth married in 1905) was also a Licensed Victualler. Coincidence? Maybe not!

I could do with turning up a marriage for Julius and Mary E now...

Just found the following on LancsBMD:

1874
WHITEHEAD Julius
WALTON Mary E
Manchester Cathedral (formerly Manchester Collegiate Church), Manchester

Do you think the above could be my Mary Elizabeth Boulton after her first husband, named 'unknown' Walton died?
