I have just noticed this thread after replying on the other one 
Just to say that 38 and 40 Gibson Street Ardwick was the Mechanics Arms in 1891. RG12/3167 folio 94 page 28. 38 and 40 were also listed as a Beerhouse in 1881.
1901 there is just a number 40 but no one listed as living there, although I suspect it was really Sarah Pratice who is listed at no.32 (see note about side door to no.40) . RG13/3676 folio 35 page 25.

This is such an interesting find (re. Mechanics Arms) - thank you for your post.
It really looks like Mary Elizabeth Whitehead had a connection to the "pub / beer" industry.
When Valentine Moore married Mary Elizabeth in 1905 he gives his occupation as "Stonemason - Journeyman". My granddad said he remembers his uncle Valentine being a pub landlord but until the 1911 census was released I'd not found any evidence of this (I've since also found Valentine in Slater's Manchester, Salford & Suburban Directory - 1909 - Licensed Victualler, Lord Nelson, 91 Chapel Street).
From all this new evidence I'm wondering if Valentine became a pub landlord through his wife, Mary Elizabeth.
Just one quick question before I go:
Do you think the address of 38 Gibson Street, as given by Mary Elizabeth on her marriage certificate, was a pub at the time of her marriage in January 1905?

Hi,
Yes, I do think 38 and 40 Gibson Street were the same building. It was on the corner of Bunyan Street and I suspect it was probably very similar to the photo of the Albert on Gibson Street on the Manchester Images Site:
www.images.manchester.gov.uk
just type in Gibson Street. You will notice the door at the corner and then one at the front. There was still a "beer retailer" living at 40 Gibson Street in 1909.
