*COMPLETED* Can't Find Warrington / Manchester family prior to 1901
« on: Monday 29 June 09 19:07 UTC (UK) »

Hi,

I have a little mystery I am hoping someone reading will be able to help me with. I have a CRAIG family on the 1901 census that I can't find on any earlier censuses. I'm also struggling to find registrations of birth for the children of the family.

This is what I do have:

1901 Census
Source Citation: Class RG13; Piece 3585; Folio 7; Page 5.
32 New Road, Warrington
Head - Elizabeth A CRAIG - 43 (c. 1858) - Manchester - M
Son - John H - 23 (c. 1878) - Manchester - S - Railway Plate Layer
Son - William - 19 (c. 1882) - Warrington - S - Butcher
Son - Thomas - 18 (c. 1883) - Warrington - S - General Labourer
Daughter - Annie (c. 1886) - 15 - Warrington - S - Cotton Winder
Daughter - Edith (c. 1888) - 13 - Warrington
Son - Daniel - 4 (c. 1897) - Warrington
Daughter - Margaret - 1 (c. 1900) - Warrington

The only registrations of birth I have been able to find are for Daniel and Margaret:

Birth - April/May/June 1896
CRAIG, Daniel - Warrington - 8c 266

Birth - October/November/December 1899
CRAIG, Margaret - Warrington - 8c 220

Does anyone think they can find the family on any earlier censuses?

Thanks for reading, Rowan Tree  Smiley

Hello

Because of the 9 year gap in children, could this be Elizabeth's 2nd Marriage?/

Did you send for the Birth certs of Daniel or Margaret?  could be different father to rest.

What was Elizabeths maiden name or former name?

That may account for not being able to find them on earlier census's

This ties in with what I've just found.  Lizzie Halliwell with children that match yours, in 1891 census, living in Warrington

BTW I found this (on ancestry) by going to 1891 census and entering

john h  b1878 manchester
mother elizabeth a
sibling annie

and not filling in anything else including surname (ie less is more as keeps being quoted)

It doesn't always work, but it can be useful and sometimes shows up how the transcriber has mangled the surname on the original.

Hope this might help in future searches
