Hi,

I have found my ancestor on the 1911 census:-
GRANT Thomas, head, married, male, age 44, police sergeant, born Armagh, Forkhill; GRANT Bertha Driver, wife, married (under 1 year), female, age 26, born Manchester; GRANT Mary Kathleen, daughter, female, age 0, born Manchester;
Wanting to order the marriage certificate I found a reference on the FreeBMD for June 1910 Thomas Grant/Bertha Bowman Fylde 8e 1324. As it was the only reference that sort of made sense I went ahead and ordered the certificate. Today I received an email from the GRO which said they are going to do a partial refund as although Thomas and Bertha appear on the same page, they didn't marry each other. I can't find any other reference on the Free BMD that fits.
I have had a look at the Lancashire BMD and found a marriage in 1910 for Thomas Grant/Bertha Driver Alberge reference Blackpool OFY/45/16 and the marriage took place at Fylde Register Office/Registrar Attended. Now to order this certificate from Blackpool, I have to apply by post with two SAE's, two IRC's? and a Bankers Draft (because I live overseas).
Does anyone know how I can get this certificate in the same way as from the GRO i.e. online with payment by credit card?
Thanks,
Luzzu

The easiest thing to do is order the same certificate from the GRO again, but this time only give the groom's name. In fact if I were you I would ask them if you can refuse the partial refund and get the certificate that you originally ordered. The fault is kindof partly with them. Otherwise you will have to pay another £7.

Hi,
Just received an automated reply from GRO to say it will take 5 days to deal with my email so I suppose by then the refund will already have gone through so its not looking hopeful. Anyway, I will be patient and will have to reorder if they can't help.
Another lesson learned - its true you learn by your mistakes.
Thanks for your help.

When you're ordering from the GRO
Register page 1, fill in and say YES you have General Register Office Index (which is name, year, quarter, district, vol, page) page 2, delivery details page 3, fill in the *red starred* bits only
By now you'll have already registered, and the delivery details should already be there, so it's just pages 1 and 2 for you to fill in.
This way you get the certificate you have ordered. If for instance you start filling in details, you might put the spouse name as Mary Ann and the name is on the index as Mary, and they don't send it. As has happened here.

Jan, yes I think you can order without the numbers but you pay more.
I would say that even if the refund comes through, it might be worth explaining the situation. You never know, they may then issue the certificate for less, considering the fact that you've already paid for a proportion of it. They can only say 'no'.
What are the chances of two Berthas on the same page? You were unlucky.

Just received a reply from the GRO saying that because the partial refund has already been processed, the only way to obtain the certificate is to make a fresh application and pay £7.00. Had a feeling they would say that, but nothing ventured, nothing gained.
I know I made a mistake but it would be better if the GRO would give an option before doing a refund, especially as in this case both the brides were called Bertha.
Appreciate all your replies. Thanks.

Hi
Its good to know they are helpful if you ring - the email they sent to me was very formal and too the point. The problem is I was so sure I had everything right when I ordered the certificate, I didn't know I had a tricky situation until they told me they were going to do the refund. As one of the other replies said I was unlucky there was a transcription mistake as May Coombes was listed instead of "my" Bertha and both the brides on that reference were called Bertha. I thought it was quite an unusual name but obviously not.
I know now that I gave them too much information and if I had just given the groom's name, I would have got the right certificate anyway.
