This is likely to be a "long shot"' but I live in hope!

I have discovered 432059 Spr Richard Dunn 55th Divisional Signal Company RE, who was awarded a MM in WW1. The award appears in the Supplement to the London Gazette on 7 October 1918. His "home town" being recorded as "Kensington". I had originally thought of London, but of course it more likely to be here in Liverpool as there was a RE unit based here prior to WW1.

I have no other information; can any one help?

Hi Woody,

Any information on him at all.  I have the usual medal index card info as well as a citation for his MM.

Unfortunately there are several individuals with his name on the 1911 census and I can't prove which one he is!

Any thoughts are more than welcome; even if it is "give up"!

Mark, Have you thought about getting his army records?  I assume that is possible for a  UK soldier- it certainly is for Canadian and Australian members of the armed forces.  These records will give next of kin, addresses where he lived- all sorts of stuff that fill in the background anf enable you to do cross checking on other info.

Thanks for taking the trouble to contact me.

Unfortunately, his service papers have not survived and hence my post here.  There are too many people in the 1911 Census with the same name to enable me to definitively say which is "my" man.  I need another clue!

I have an interest in the name DUNN they were from Eccles/Salford Manchester rather than Liverpool. 

However, trying to find his army records.  Did he survive the WW1  If so, did he apply for an army pension - my great grandfathers records were copied and survived the blitz which destroyed so much of the WWI archive.  National Archives might be your best best.  Ref for Pensions is WO 364
Service records : WO 363

You can find some army pension records if you are signed up for Ancestry.com  (I'm not but maybe another rootschatter can help)..... Smiley

Also, have you tried consulting the Regimental Archive direct?  You have his service number, so that might be a way to go.

The Royal Engineers Museum is in Gillingham Kent.  They have a website with links down the side for research:  If you can't go yourself, maybe a post to the Rootschat WWI or Kent board will find someone who can go for you.

There is a 14 vol set produced by subscription after the Great War called 'The National Roll of the Great War' which gives information on some individuals.  Bear in mind the info given is not always accurate but it might be a source.  As an example  Spinning the Web website has  Manchester/Salford portion online:

I thought you might be interested in seeing the citation for his MM:-

Richard Dunn's MM was Gazetted on the 7th October 1918. The original citation states:

"On the 10th April he was with Sergt WESTWELL'S party laying lines in the neighbourhood of ESSARS and LE HAMEL. On that party returning, Sapper DUNN remained behind with one other man to assist the linesmen on the 164th Infy Bde lines. He was there continuously until the end of the battle.
On the night of the 14th April, although he had been out on lines all day, he volunteered to go out to look for a linesman who was wounded and lying out. He spent the whole night looking for this man under very heavy shell fire, eventually finding him at dawn, dead, near a line."

Incidentally, I also have some of Sgt Westwell's medals.

A possibility in 1901.  This Richard living at 140 islington with parents father a Draper age 52 born Cumberland.  Mother Edith born in the Pool

Here we have the Military Medal and British War Medal awarded to Richard Dunn.  Sadly, his Victory Medal is missing.
