Hi
On the Family Search Records website I have found the Death Certificate of my gr gr uncle James Rooney.
It states that he was a Miner and died on the 27th October 1918 of TB and that he had been in the hospital/institution at Eureka, Utah for 5 years. He emigrated there from Cumberland, England in about 1905.
Would sks know the name of the hospital as it wasn't on the form anywhere. I know that this is a long shot but any help or suggestions would be much appreciated.
Many thanks for taking the time to read this.
Regards

Hi Lisa
Many, many thanks for helping me, I really do appreciate it.
James was born in Egremont, Cumberland in the December qtr of 1881 to Joshua and Ellen nee McAvoy [mis-spelt on the Death Certificate as McVoy] so it is definitely him.
I didn't know when he went over to Utah, or where from, so this information is brilliant. His sister Elizabeth followed her husband William John Maxwell over in 1907 with the children but was killed in a motor accident in 1917, so this would be the brother in law.
May I ask another question. By going over to Eureka at that time would Elizabeth or William John be Mormons and if so, would they have had "assisted passage".
Again many thanks

Hi Half Pint:
I tried various google searches, looking for the hospital name. I cannot find reference to one. Apparently, the town was quite small, by today's standards. I'm not sure that they would have had a hospital like you and I would envision. It could have been a building for the ill miners. There is a State Hospital for TB patients, but it wasn't close to Eureka.
Some facts are here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eureka,_Utah
Elizabeth and family came over on 21-June-1906 (for your notes). They DO reference Eureka, Utah, not Eureka, Calif.
I'm not too sure about immigration to America (I'm Canadian). There's also a chance they settled in Utah for work at the mines. I have a "Ghost Town" book...it includes old mining towns in Colorado, Utah, California, etc. They could have gone as part of the Mormon movement, or simply for work.
Update: From the few Mormon passages I've seen, on several of the manifests, the passengers' final destinations were to the same area, if not the same town. That is not the case with this page.

Sadly, in 1920, still in Eureka William is living with the following children: Wm (age 18), Elizabeth (age 16), Robert (age 15), Ellen (age 12), Grace (age 7) and Jones [James], age 6
As you mentioned, Elizabeth had died by then. No sign of Annie or "Milired".
Note: I could not read the spelling for Milired; that is the spelling of the transcriber.
William was working in a quartz mine.

Hi
I went onto the "find a grave" site and keyed in Maxwell for Eureka and I found
Elizabeth William Snr and his 2nd wife James and his wife
I have checked Elizabeth's death certificate on Family Search Record and the reason is given as Acute ****** [I cannot read the doctors writing] but does not seem to mention pregnancy! Her occupation was given as Housekeeper.
Ann was found on there and she died on the 21st October 1910 aged 1yr 9mths and 2 days of endri colitis.
Also Mildred who died on the 10th Aug 1910 aged 4 months of the same condition.
Robert's death certificate is on there and he died in June 1945 of pneumonia at the Valley Hospital
I cannot believe all the help I have had tonight, you are all being brilliant. Thank you.

Hi Lisa
You are definitely better than me on Google as I can't seem to find this.
Once again, you may know about this, but if you google "William Maxwell" Eureka Utah, there is an obituary for a William. It says this man was born December 19, 1901 in Eureka, Utah. It mentions siblings: Jim and Jane.
The service was conducted by Gordon Bunn, President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
